Nashville General Hospital is thrilled to accept applications for the Nurse Residency Program! This is a program for new graduate Registered Nurses with less than six months of experience to truly thrive and grow with us.
The Nurse Residents are required to be licensed prior to their start date. Residents that can provide official documentation of successful NCLEX results and pending application for TN RN licensure (or a state that is part of the enhanced nurse licensure compact) will be considered eligible to start.
Employee must have valid BLS when hired. ACLS, TNCC, PALS and CPI are required within 90 days of hire. ENPC preferred.

Overview
Nashville General Hospital's 9-month Nurse Residency Program (NRP) has been designed for all new Associate's and Bachelor's degree graduate nurses who have passed the National Council Licensure Exam (NCLEX) or a new registered nurse with less than 6 months of experience. The Division of Nursing of Nashville General Hospital (NGH) has adopted the nurse residency program and the preceptor model for orientation and integration to the different specialty departments.
It is our goal to assist nurse residents to develop the knowledge, skills, and behaviors that will enable successful transition from the role of a student nurse to the practice role of the professional nurse. It is the aim of the NRP to provide the education, training, and support crucial to the provision of safe, quality care in a collaborative environment that contributes to positive patient outcomes.
Nursing orientation will provide a solid foundation. You will develop confidence and competence in areas such as clinical nursing skills, communication, critical thinking, time management, and teamwork to successfully meet the standards of practice and the professional performance expectations of the Nursing Division of Nashville General Hospital. Your orientation will concentrate on your successful integration into the healthcare team.
Through the common vision shared by Nursing Leadership, the Nursing Education and Professional Development Department and the Preceptor Team, we will guide your transition to professional practice by supporting your orientation and ongoing professional development.
What our Nurse Residency Program Offers or What We Provide
Start date options vary based on area hired and successful NCLEX completion.
Our nurse residency program offers employment and training in the following specialty areas that allows nurse residents to work in an area that matches their practice interests and goals: Cardiac/Telemetry, and Med/Surg based on unit needs. For those nurse residents unsure of the specialty practice to which they want to commit, they will be offered a clinical rotation through the specialty areas to enable the resident to choose the area that best fits their interests.
The nurse residency program will consist of:
  • A one-day general hospital orientation hosted by Human Resources
  • A 10-day Nursing: CORE Orientation to introduce you to general nursing standards, policies and procedures, nursing skills and the electronic health record.
  • The preceptorship will introduce you to unit specific content and skill development. (length of preceptorship varies by unit and generally lasts 12-16 weeks).
  • Throughout the 9-month nurse residency program, the nurse resident cohort will attend monthly workshops focused on leadership, professional role, and patient outcomesThese monthly workshops are a REQUIREMENT to be part of the Nurse Residency Program.
  • Identification and development of a unit-based performance improvement project will be required, and successful completion of the nurse residency program will conclude with the presentation of the project to the nursing division.
  • After the completion of the initial preceptorship, a mentor will be assigned each shift as a resource and support to the newly transitioned to service nurse resident for 8 weeks.
