Search IntentWeekend Network Administrator vs Part-Time Network Technician

Weekend Network Administrators focus on managing and maintaining network systems during weekends, often requiring higher-level certifications and experience. Part-Time Network Technicians typically perform troubleshooting and support tasks on a less senior level, often in retail or small business environments. While both roles involve network support, the Administrator role emphasizes oversight and planning, whereas the Technician role is more hands-on and task-specific.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a weekend network administrator, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Weekend Network Administrator, you need a solid understanding of network protocols, troubleshooting, and system administration, typically supported by a degree in information technology or a related field. Familiarity with network monitoring tools, firewalls, and certifications such as CompTIA Network+ or Cisco CCNA is highly beneficial. Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and effective communication are important soft skills for this role. These qualifications ensure reliable network performance, quick resolution of issues, and efficient collaboration during limited weekend shifts.

What is a weekend network administrator?

Weekend network administrators are IT professionals responsible for managing, monitoring, and maintaining an organization's computer networks specifically during weekends. Their duties include ensuring network uptime, performing routine maintenance, troubleshooting issues, and responding to incidents that may arise outside of typical business hours. This role is crucial for companies that require 24/7 network availability or have operations during weekends, as it helps prevent downtime and ensures continuous connectivity.

What are the main challenges a weekend network administrator might encounter, and how can they effectively manage these situations?

A Weekend Network Administrator often faces the challenge of working with limited in-person support, as most staff and vendors are unavailable outside regular hours. This requires strong problem-solving skills, proactive planning, and clear documentation of any changes made. Administrators should ensure thorough communication with weekday teams, utilize remote monitoring tools, and be prepared to handle unexpected incidents independently. Building familiarity with escalation procedures and having reliable contacts for emergencies can also help manage critical situations efficiently.

About Goosehead
Since 2003, Goosehead Insurance has been disrupting the insurance industry by giving clients the power of choice, utilizing a smarter marketing approach, and delivering world-class service. This is all powered by our focus on hiring and retaining extraordinary people. Our clients trust us with their most valuable possessions, so we're more than just a bit selective when it comes to hiring new team members.
Job Summary
We're seeking an experienced Senior Network Administrator to lead the design, optimization, configuration, and security of Goosehead's enterprise network infrastructure. You'll build resilient, scalable networks across on-prem and cloud environments (Meraki, Azure), while ensuring high availability and compliance.
This role blends hands-on expertise in Windows, Linux, virtualization (Nutanix), and unified communications with strategic leadership in areas like identity management (Intune, Entra ID), future-state planning (ZTNA, hybrid cloud), and infrastructure documentation. You'll mentor junior IT staff, drive automation, and play a key role in business continuity, disaster recovery, and transformation efforts.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
  • Architect, deploy, and maintain enterprise LAN/WAN environments utilizing Fortinet (FortiGate/FortiManager), Cisco Meraki (MX/MS/MR), and Juniper (SRX/EX) platforms
  • Lead network implementations, upgrades, and migrations, ensuring minimal downtime and adherence to change management processes
  • Identify, remediate, and proactively eliminate network problem areas through root cause analysis and performance tuning
  • Design and manage SD-WAN, high-availability (HA) firewall clusters, VLAN segmentation, and secure network zoning
  • Configure and troubleshoot advanced routing protocols including BGP and OSPF
  • Implement and maintain IPSec and SSL VPNs, site-to-site tunnels, and remote access solutions
  • Administer and secure Azure network connectivity, including VPN gateways, virtual networks, and network security groups (NSGs)
  • Develop, audit, and enforce next-generation firewall policies, IDS/IPS, and threat protection controls
  • Monitor and support VoIP systems, including SIP trunks, QoS configuration, and performance metrics (latency, jitter, packet loss, MOS), ensuring high call quality and reliability
  • Perform packet-level analysis and advanced troubleshooting to resolve complex network and voice issues
  • Maintain detailed network documentation, topology diagrams, standard operating procedures, and configuration backups
  • Produce KPI and performance reports covering uptime, security posture, capacity, and voice quality metrics

Required Skills and Abilities
  • The ideal candidate will demonstrate advanced hands-on expertise, strong documentation discipline, and the ability to lead infrastructure initiatives while maintaining a secure, highly available, and performance-optimized network environment.

Benefits Summary
  • High quality voluntary health, vision, disability, life, and dental insurance programs
  • 401K Matching Plan
  • Employee Stock Purchase Plan
  • Paid holidays, vacation, and sick leave
  • Corporate sponsored programs to enhance employee physical, financial, mental, and emotional wellness
  • Financial Solution Program
