Job Summary

The Library Media Specialist is responsible for managing the school library media center and providing a wide range of services to support the educational program. This includes fostering a love of reading, teaching information literacy skills, and integrating technology into the curriculum. The specialist will collaborate with teachers and staff to enhance student learning and promote the effective use of information resources.

Key Responsibilities
  • Library Management:
    • Oversee the daily operations of the library media center, including the organization and maintenance of library materials.
    • Develop and manage the library budget, ensuring the acquisition of new books, resources, and technology.
    • Maintain accurate records of library inventory, circulation, and usage.
  • Instructional Support:
    • Collaborate with teachers to integrate library resources and information literacy skills into the curriculum.
    • Teach students how to locate, evaluate, and use information effectively.
    • Conduct library orientation sessions and provide instruction on the use of library resources and technology.
  • Promoting Reading and Literacy:
    • Foster a love of reading and lifelong learning among students and staff.
    • Organize and promote reading programs, book fairs, author visits, and other literacy events.
    • Curate a diverse and inclusive collection of books and resources that reflect the interests and needs of the school community.
  • Support the integration of technology into teaching and learning.
  • Provide training and support for students and staff on the use of digital resources, research databases, and educational technology tools.
  • Stay current with emerging technologies and digital tools that can enhance learning and library services.
  • Collaboration and Communication:
    • Work closely with teachers, administrators, and other staff to support the educational goals of the school.
    • Communicate regularly with students, staff, and parents about library programs, resources, and events.
    • Participate in school and district committees, meetings, and professional development opportunities.
  • Student Support:
    • Assist students with research projects, reading selection, and use of library resources.
    • Create a welcoming and inclusive library environment where all students feel supported and encouraged.
    • Provide individualized support to students with diverse learning needs.
Qualifications
  • Master's degree in Library Science, Information Science, or a related field.
  • Valid state certification as a School Library Media Specialist.
  • Previous experience in a school library setting preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of children's and young adult literature, information literacy, and educational technology.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues and engage with students in a positive manner.
  • Proficiency in the use of library management systems and digital resources.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to sit, stand, and move freely for extended periods.
  • Capacity to lift and move books and library equipment as necessary.
  • Ability to supervise and interact with students in the library setting.
  • Work is performed in a library/media center setting.
  • Occasional evening and weekend work may be required for school events and meetings.
