Survey Crew Chief
Location: Springfield, Missouri and surrounding areas
Job Type: Full-Time
Pay: $25.00–$30.00 per hour (based on experience and qualifications)
Typical Schedule: M-F, varying hours depending on schedules/work demand between 7am-5pm. Occasional weekends, overtime or overnight travel may be required based on project needs.
Lead Survey Projects That Shape the Region’s Infrastructure
CJW Transportation Consultants is seeking an experienced Survey Crew Chief to lead field survey operations on transportation, municipal, commercial, and civil engineering projects throughout Springfield and surrounding regions. This position combines technical expertise with leadership responsibilities, overseeing field crews while ensuring projects are completed safely, efficiently, and with the highest level of accuracy.

What You'll Do
As Survey Crew Chief, you will plan, coordinate, and supervise daily field surveying activities while serving as the primary leader for assigned survey crews.
Responsibilities include:
- Lead and supervise survey crews performing property, boundary, topographic, construction staking, and ALTA surveys.
- Plan, coordinate, and execute field survey activities to ensure accurate and timely data collection.
- Operate, calibrate, and maintain survey equipment including robotic total stations, GPS/GNSS receivers, digital levels, 3D scanners, and electronic data collectors.
- Collect, interpret, and verify field data for accuracy and completeness.
- Coordinate with Professional Land Surveyors, survey managers, engineers, and clients to understand project requirements and schedules.
- Train, mentor, and provide technical guidance to survey crew members.
- Ensure compliance with CJW safety procedures, surveying standards, and quality control requirements.
- Maintain company vehicles and survey equipment.
- Travel throughout Missouri and neighboring states in our region and occasionally work weekends and/or stay overnight for project assignments.
What We're Looking For
Survey Crew Chief is a technical and leadership role requiring expertise in surveying methods, equipment operation, and team management. The position demands accuracy, attention to detail, and adaptability to field conditions while ensuring projects are completed efficiently and safely.
Required Qualifications Include:
- Experience leading survey crews on boundary, topographic, construction, ALTA/NSPS, and control surveys.
- Proficiency operating survey equipment (GPS, robotic total stations, LiDAR preferred) and data collection tools
- Strong understanding of surveying principles, field procedures, and construction staking.
- Excellent leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
- Ability to analyze field data and solve problems independently.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing accurate work and detailed documentation.
- Ability to work independently or as part of a team while collaborating effectively with project managers and office staff.
- Valid driver's license with a clean driving record.
- Ability to lift and carry survey equipment weighing up to approximately 50 pounds.
- Ability to work safely in varying terrain and weather conditions.
Physical Requirements
This position requires working outdoors in a wide variety of environmental conditions and terrain. Employees regularly walk long distances, work near active roadways and construction sites, and may occasionally travel overnight to support project needs. Safety is a core value at CJW, and all employees are expected to comply with company safety policies, including drug and alcohol testing requirements when applicable.
