Job Summary
Library Student Assistants serve as the first point of contact for users entering the library and are key contributors to creating a welcoming, supportive, and resourceful environment. They assist with a variety of public service and operational tasks, including circulation desk support, shelving materials, answering questions, and assisting with special projects and events. This position requires strong customer service skills, attention to detail, and a willingness to work collaboratively with library staff and patrons. Currently, we are looking for student workers who are available to work on Sundays and evening shifts.
Responsibilities
Customer Service & Circulation Support
  • Provide courteous, helpful assistance to library users
  • Check library materials and equipment in and out using the library system
  • Answer and route telephone calls professionally
  • Assist patrons with general inquiries about the library, its services, and its policies
  • Direct users to appropriate staff or departments for specialized help

Library Operations
  • Shelve returned materials and maintain order in assigned areas through shelf reading
  • Assist patrons with scanning, copying, and basic technology needs
  • Open and close the library following established procedures
  • Record library usage statistics and reference interactions
  • Deliver, sort, and distribute internal and external library mail

Special Projects & Events
  • Support library staff with various projects as needed
  • Assist with outreach events, guest speaker sessions, and other programming
  • May create flyers, signage, or contribute to the library's social media presence

Advanced Responsibilities (as experience allows)
  • Assist with interlibrary loan processes
  • Help maintain building organization and navigate user questions about library spaces
  • Support promotional efforts through basic graphic design or content creation

Required Qualifications
  • Must be a currently enrolled student in good academic and conduct standing
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with a customer-first attitude
  • Ability to follow detailed instructions and work independently or as part of a team
  • Basic computer proficiency; willingness to learn library systems (e.g., Alma, Gil-Find, Tipasa)
  • Dependable and punctual
  • Ability to lift materials weighing up to 50 pounds

Preferred Qualifications
  • Prior experience in a customer service role
  • Cumulative GPA of 2.3 or higher
  • Good judicial standing with the university
  • Available to work weekends and evening shifts

Library Student Assistants work scheduled shifts during regular library hours. Shifts may include evenings, weekends, and university holidays. Availability for evening shifts and flexibility during peak periods (e.g., finals week, orientation, homecoming) are especially valued.
