Library Assistant

This position provides customer service at the circulation desk. The assistant is responsible for clerical work that requires the application of basic library work practices within the library system. The assistant checks out and in library materials. The assistant will register library cards, collect fees, and shelve books and other materials.

Responsibilities include:

  • Providing excellent customer service to all age groups.
  • Assisting in programs to promote library card sign-up.
  • Working with a variety of software and the Integrated Library System.
  • Ability to communicate with the team professionally.
  • Assisting with the use of photocopiers, self-check machines, computers, and fax machines.
  • Regularly checking emails and the library website for new information.
  • Providing introductory reader's advisory and information assistance to patrons.
  • Ability to evaluate return materials for damage, missing parts, and conditions.
  • Participating in meetings and making suggestions.
  • Resolving patron problems in conformity with library procedures and policies.
  • Locating materials for patrons, retrieving reserved books, and checking in and out books.
  • Maintaining accurate records and files.
  • Monitoring security and maintenance of the facility; will report to the supervisor if there is an issue.
  • Receiving and processing cash, check, and credit payments for fines and fees.
  • Making recommendations for more effective, innovative programming, and assisting with promotions.
  • Performing other duties as required.

Minimum experience and training:

  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Minimum of one year of customer service.
