Job description

Job Description:
Position Purpose:
The Medical Laboratory Technician will provide phlebotomy, biological sample processing, and laboratory technician services for clinical research studies involving substance use. The primary functions of this position are to collect blood and other biological samples from research participants. They will be responsible for labeling, processing, and storing biological samples within the laboratory. They will conduct some assays within the laboratory, ship some samples to external laboratories for assays, and transport some samples to local biological repositories for long-term storage. Other responsibilities may include report preparation. This position handles privileged information.
The position requires a skilled individual to work directly, in-person, with individuals participating in research studies investigating the relationships between substance use and disease risk.
Research protocols involve project oversight by the NIH and other regulatory agencies (DEA, FDA).
The position will involve exposure to potentially infectious body fluids, including blood products, and must complete Brown-approved safety training regarding these materials.
It's estimated that the schedule may be 2 days per week at 7.5 hours per week. Please note that weekly schedules may vary based on study needs and will be determined in collaboration with the study supervisor.

This is a fixed term position with a current end date of 8/31/2027 which may be extended based upon available funding.
Job Qualifications:
  • Certificate of completion in Phlebotomy/lab technician as part of a Medical Lab Science Certificate or Associate's Degree required
  • CPR Certification required
  • Medical Lab Technician Certification through credentialing organization preferred
  • One (1+) year of direct phlebotomy experience and demonstrated proficiency in the phlebotomy field preferred
  • One (1+) year of related work experience in a research laboratory setting preferred
  • Knowledge and competence in phlebotomy skills, aseptic technique and Universal Precautions required
  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as proportions, percentages and volume required
  • Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, perform multiple tasks efficiently and accurately, take initiative and maintain organized working conditions required
  • Strong communication skills, excellent organization, attention to detail, maturity, and responsibility required
  • Proficiency of relevant computer applications, including word processing and data management, required.
  • Must be competent in other job skills by end of introductory period or position will be forfeited
  • Six (6) months+ of blood specimen processing experience preferred
  • Knowledge of experimental research methodology and clinical research procedures preferred.
