Job Description:

This recruitment will be used to fill multiple Student Desk Consultant positions (10 to 24 hours per week) starting in September 2026 for the Valley Library Circulation Unit at Oregon State University (OSU). This position provides direct customer service to patrons. Student employees will work in a flexible and supportive environment. Scheduled hours may include daytime, evening, or weekend hours between 7am and midnight. Professional development and advancement opportunities are available.

Position Duties:

• Provides excellent and empathetic customer service, engaging in culturally appropriate and inclusive communication. Clearly and effectively supports a diverse clientele in the use of library tools and strategies as part of a multi-generational team. (Communication/Equity & Inclusion/Teamwork)

• Uses library systems to provide circulation services, including checking items in and out and registering public patrons. Responds to patron questions in-person, over the phone, and online. Ensures the desk and other areas of the library are clean and maintained and that circulating items and supplies are inventoried, restocked, and prepared for use. (Technology/Communication)

• Responds to informational and reference questions. Conducts reference interviews and assists users in online searching and access to online electronic resources. Identifies and shares relevant resources with patrons with information needs, including knowing how and when to refer. (Communication/Critical Thinking/Technology)

• Answers basic questions about and troubleshoots issues with loanable technology and library software, computers and equipment throughout library public service areas. (Technology)

• Follows and explains OSU Libraries safety and security policies and procedures. Reports safety, security, and building maintenance issues. (Critical Thinking/ Professionalism)

• Upholds and explains library values while performing these duties, including but not limited to a commitment to access, patron privacy, and user-centered service. (Professionalism/Equity & Inclusion)

• Must be academically enrolled in a high school, community college, or university and pursuing a program or course of study

• Must meet Academic Standing Requirements; students on academic suspension are not eligible for employment

• Must meet the applicable minimal enrollment standard

  • High School student: Regularly enrolled in a high school or participating in a home-schooling program

  • Undergraduate and post-baccalaureate student: 6 credit hours per term

  • Undergraduate international student: 12 credit hours per term*

  • Graduate student officially admitted to Graduate School: 5 credit hours per term

  • Graduate international student officially admitted to Graduate School: 9 credit hours per term*

*International students may be allowed to carry fewer hours than specified above and still be considered "full-time" by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). A reduced course load is approved by theOffice of International Services(OIS), and must be provided to the Student Employment Center.
