Weekend Graveyard information

What is a weekend graveyard job?

Weekend graveyard jobs refer to positions that require employees to work overnight shifts during the weekends, typically from late evening to early morning hours. These jobs are common in industries that operate 24/7, such as healthcare, security, hospitality, and customer service. The 'graveyard' term comes from the idea that these shifts occur during hours when most people are asleep. Employees working these shifts often receive higher pay due to the unusual hours and may have unique responsibilities suited to nighttime operations. These roles can be ideal for those seeking flexible schedules or additional income.

What are common challenges faced by employees working weekend graveyard shifts, and how can they be managed?

Working weekend graveyard shifts can present unique challenges such as disrupted sleep patterns, limited social interactions, and adjusting to a different work-life balance. Many employees find it helpful to establish a consistent sleep schedule, use blackout curtains or eye masks to improve daytime rest, and maintain open communication with family and friends to stay connected. Employers may also provide resources such as wellness programs or shift differentials to support their graveyard shift teams. Being proactive about self-care and utilizing available support can help you stay healthy and productive in this role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a weekend graveyard shift worker, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Weekend Graveyard Shift Worker, you generally need reliability, time management, and the ability to stay alert and focused during overnight hours, often supported by a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with workplace-specific systems such as security monitoring equipment, inventory software, or point-of-sale systems is commonly required. Strong self-motivation, communication, and problem-solving skills help individuals stand out in this role. These abilities are essential to ensure safety, productivity, and smooth operations during less-supervised nighttime hours.

Job description

About the Role
Every bottle that hits a shelf, every case that lands on a store floor - it started with someone in our warehouse the night before, building it right. As an Order Picker on VED's evening shift, you are the first link in a chain that ends with cold product in the hands of customers across Virginia. You don't see the end result directly, but the delivery team does. The accounts do. And on a good night, when the orders go out clean and on time, the whole operation runs the way it's supposed to.
Our warehouse associates work hard, move fast, and hold themselves to a high standard of accuracy. If you take pride in doing physical work well, thrive in a team environment that counts on you, and want to be part of a company that's been moving beverage across Virginia for decades - we want to hear from you.
What You'll Do
  • Pick and build delivery route orders using the EasyPick scanning system (handheld scanner and tablet), stacking cases accurately in layers for safe transport and clean delivery; pick sheets may be used as directed
  • Verify order accuracy using EasyPick two-step scan verification; confirm case counts throughout the build and sign off on completed orders
  • Operate electric walk-behind and walk/ride (walkie-rider) pallet jacks to move and stage completed orders
  • Operate sit-down forklift as needed (certification required within 90 days of hire if not yet certified)
  • Assist with loading delivery trucks at end of shift and perform end-of-shift warehouse cleanup
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment in compliance with VED and OSHA standards
  • Cross-train in other warehouse functions and provide coverage as needed

What We're Looking For
  • Ability to lift and carry 15-40+ lbs repeatedly throughout a 10-15 hour shift, with frequent bending, reaching, and standing - this is a physically demanding role
  • Sharp attention to detail: accurate case counts and correct order builds are how we measure success
  • Basic math skills: ability to count and verify case quantities throughout the shift
  • Ability to safely operate electric pallet jacks; forklift certification a plus
  • Reliable attendance - your team depends on you showing up, every shift, on time
  • Comfortable working in a high-noise, temperature-controlled environment (approx. 50°F in the warehouse; outdoor temps in drive-thru areas)
  • Composite-toe footwear required on day one

What We Offer
  • Competitive hourly pay: $18.00-$22.00 (evening shift rate, includes $1.00/hr shift differential)
  • Health, dental, and vision insurance
  • Company-paid short-term and long-term disability
  • Company-paid life insurance
  • Safe Harbor 401(k)
  • Paid time off (PTO)
  • Uniforms provided
