There will be the occasional 4:30 am shift start time
Position Responsibilities
Position Summary
Under the direction of the golf course superintendent, the incumbent performs one or more of the following types of work: golf course laborer and mowing crew. Most work will be on the mowing crew which could entail operating a riding lawnmower. There is opportunity to work through the remainder of the summer until the course closes for the season in the fall.
Responsibilities
Job Duty Function Maintaining the golf course by: Job Duties/Responsibilities
  • Mowing and trimming grass using a riding lawn mower, weed-eater, and push mower).
  • Changing golf holes, raking sand traps, removing clippings, leaves and debris from golf course area.
  • Pruning trees and bushes using hand and power tools.
  • Weeding, shoveling and fertilizing.
  • Driving a vehicle to transport the clippings off the course.
Percentage Of Time 60% Essential/Marginal Essential Job Duty Function Working with the irrigations system by: Job Duties/Responsibilities
  • Repairing sprinklers and other irrigation and watering systems.
Percentage Of Time 20% Essential/Marginal Essential Job Duty Function Maintaining equipment by: Job Duties/Responsibilities
  • Performing minor mechanic work on grounds equipment.
  • Greasing and cleaning equipment.

Position Qualifications
Required Qualifications
  • Due to the duties of this position, successful candidates must be at least 18 years of age

  • Must possess a valid driver's license and be able to meet the university's driving requirements including a driving record check

Preferred Qualifications
Ability to:
  • Safely operate various types of golf course maintenance equipment including mowers (both large riding mowers and 21" self-propelled mowers), weed trimmers, small tractors and all kinds of hand tools from shovels to pruners
  • Safely operate golf carts
  • Work independently without close supervision
  • Work safely and cooperatively with other team members to accomplish desired results
  • Interact with public visitors in a positive manner
  • Education in agriculture or related field
  • Experience in landscape maintenance or operation of farm equipment
  • Experience and basic horticultural skills i.e. working with grasses, flowers, trees
  • Experience safely operating and performing routine maintenance on large and small mowers, weed trimmers and other landscape maintenance equipment and/or farm equipment
  • Previous experience working at a golf course
  • Basic mechanical skills: for routine maintenance of small engines and equipment
  • Available to work as needed through October and possibly into November
Physical Requirements & Working Conditions
  • Physical requirements include lifting, carrying and/or otherwise moving items weighing approximately 50 pounds; bending, stooping, kneeling and moving continuously throughout the shift including up and down slopes; and working outdoors in inclement weather
  • Willing to work in areas where various landscape and agricultural chemicals have been used, and to work with the reclaimed water utilized in the irrigation system
