What is a weekend engineer?

Weekend Engineers are professionals who typically work engineering shifts during weekends, rather than standard weekday hours. They may be responsible for maintaining, repairing, or monitoring systems, equipment, or facilities to ensure continuous operation during off-peak times. Weekend Engineers are often employed in industries that require 24/7 coverage, such as manufacturing, IT, utilities, or facilities management. Their role is crucial for addressing urgent issues, performing preventative maintenance, and supporting operations when regular staff are not available.

What does a weekend engineer do?

A weekend engineer works part-time (usually on weekends and evening hours) to service equipment for various companies that they use in their operations. In addition to weekend shifts, some positions also require you to have on-call hours available on a rotating schedule with other engineers. Your responsibilities vary depending on the job and the company for which you work. For an IT company, you may service computer equipment, internet lines, and other technical equipment. In a factory position, you may work on production line equipment, such as conducting routine inspections and maintenance on equipment, ordering parts for replacement, and repairing broken or worn-down equipment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a weekend engineer?

To thrive as a Weekend Engineer, you need a solid background in engineering fundamentals, troubleshooting, and relevant technical qualifications such as a degree or certification in your engineering discipline. Familiarity with industry-specific tools, maintenance management systems, and diagnostic equipment is typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, effective communication, and the ability to work independently under time constraints are essential soft skills. These abilities ensure efficient operations, rapid response to issues, and minimal downtime during critical weekend shifts.

How does the schedule and workload of a weekend engineer typically differ from standard weekday engineering roles?

Weekend Engineers usually work during non-traditional hours, often covering shifts on Saturdays and Sundays to provide critical support or maintenance when regular staff are off. This role often involves troubleshooting urgent issues, performing preventative maintenance, and ensuring system uptime with minimal supervision. Collaboration is still key; Weekend Engineers regularly communicate with weekday teams to ensure seamless project handoffs and accurate reporting. Flexibility, self-motivation, and the ability to quickly adapt to unexpected challenges are important for success in this position.

The main difference between a Weekend Engineer and a Maintenance Technician lies in their work schedule and scope. Both roles require similar certifications and are found in similar industries, but their work hours and job focus differ.

Since 1946, we've delivered fabrication and installation services with a commitment to safety, quality, reliability, and client-focused solutions.

This role supports projects across the United States and requires a high level of travel based on business and project needs. Candidates may be based anywhere within the U.S.; however, the selected individual should be prepared for assignments at various project locations nationwide. Travel for this position may reach up to approximately 90%.
Project assignments generally last 10 to 17 months, depending on project duration and operational requirements. While assigned to a project away from home, eligible employees are provided per diem to assist with temporary living and travel-related expenses, in addition to a competitive base salary.
To support project deployment, mobilization assistance may be provided, which can include mileage reimbursement or other approved travel support. Employees may also receive extended weekend rotations approximately once per month, allowing additional time for travel home.
Position Overview
The Construction Engineer responsible for supporting the successful planning, execution, and closeout of heavy industrial construction projects. This role provides technical and project controls support by managing submittals, RFIs, schedules, change management, cost forecasting, progress reporting, and project documentation while working closely with project management, field supervision, clients, and vendors to ensure project objectives are achieved safely, on schedule, within budget, and to quality standards.
The Construction Engineer serves as a key member of the project team, providing technical guidance to construction personnel, coordinating project deliverables, tracking performance metrics, and facilitating communication among stakeholders. A successful candidate will demonstrate strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills while promoting a culture of safety, quality, accountability, and client satisfaction throughout the project lifecycle.
Responsibilities
  • Review project drawings, specifications, contracts, and quality requirements to ensure successful project execution
  • Develop and implement project engineering processes including submittals, RFIs, document control, risk management, change management, scheduling, and project reporting
  • Support Advanced Work Packaging (AWP) planning and coordinate work package development with field and construction teams
  • Provide technical support to construction personnel, including constructability reviews, specification interpretation, and engineering issue resolution
  • Manage project documentation, including submittals, RFIs, change orders, meeting minutes, schedules, progress reports, and closeout records
  • Coordinate and maintain project schedules, progress measurement systems, cost forecasts, cash flow projections, billings, and budget tracking
  • Lead schedule review meetings and collaborate with project stakeholders to identify and resolve project risks, delays, and scope changes
  • Administer the project change management process, including change order identification, documentation, tracking, and execution
  • Track vendor back charges, material procurement status, punch-list items, warranty issues, and project closeout activities
  • Ensure project documentation, reporting, and deliverables are completed accurately, stored appropriately, and submitted on time
  • Promote a strong safety and quality culture by complying with company policies, site-specific safety requirements, and project quality standards
  • Participate actively in project and team meetings while supporting client satisfaction through safe, high-quality, and timely project delivery

Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field preferred
  • 3-10 years of experience in industrial construction
  • Foundational knowledge of heavy industrial construction practices, project controls, and construction management principles
  • Understanding of applicable building codes, trade-specific codes, and construction specifications
  • Experience with project scheduling, cost control, forecasting, document management, RFIs, submittals, and change management processes
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to effectively interact with clients, vendors, and project teams
  • Strong interpersonal, leadership, and problem-solving abilities
  • Detail-oriented with a commitment to safety, quality, and continuous improvement
  • Ability to work collaboratively with field supervision, project management, and construction teams
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and project management software systems
