Automation Technician

Job Summary:
The Automation Technician position is a hands-on role responsible for designing, installing and maintaining electrical control systems and helping automate production line equipment to increase efficiency. The automation technician will assist maintenance technicians in minimizing equipment downtime. This role plays a key part in ensuring equipment reliability, process efficiency, and compliance with GMP and safety standards.
Key Responsibilities:
• Troubleshoot and repair PLC-controlled production and packaging systems (e.g., Allen-Bradley, Siemens, or Omron).
• Support commissioning and programming of new automation systems and HMI interfaces.
• Assist in diagnosing and resolving issues with variable frequency drives (VFDs), sensors, actuators, and other instrumentation.
• Conduct routine PMs on automation systems including panel inspections, backups, and firmware checks.
• Work closely with engineers and operators to improve uptime and identify process improvement opportunities.
• Interpret electrical schematics, ladder logic, and wiring diagrams.
• Maintain documentation for control panels, PLC programs, and system modifications.
• Assist in the installation and calibration of process equipment (e.g., mixers, fillers, encapsulators).
• Ensure compliance with FDA, cGMP, and safety requirements during all automation work.
• Support weekend and off-shift troubleshooting when needed.
Required Qualifications:
• Associate degree or technical diploma in Electrical Technology, Automation, or 10 years field experience.
• 2+ years of experience in manufacturing or industrial automation role.
• Hands-on experience with PLCs (Allen-Bradley preferred) and industrial control systems.
• Familiarity with HMI software and VFDs.
• Ability to use multimeters, oscilloscopes, and other diagnostic tools effectively.
• Working knowledge of NFPA 70E, NEC, and basic electrical safety.
• Strong troubleshooting and documentation skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Experience in the nutraceutical, food, or pharmaceutical industry.
• Knowledge of SCADA systems, PID loops, or SQL-based data historians.
• Exposure to automated packaging systems (labelers, cartoners, conveyors).
• Understanding of batch processes and cleanroom protocols.
Working Conditions:
• Manufacturing floor environment: exposure to noise, moving machinery, and occasional confined spaces.
• Regular standing, climbing, lifting (up to 50 lbs), and use of hand tools.
• May require occasional after-hours or weekend support for emergency repairs.
