JOB TITLE: Intern/Cultural Ambassador

DEPARTMENT: Cultural Tourism

REPORT TO: Senior Cultural Programs Manager

DATE REVISED: January 30, 2026

CLASSIFICATION: Non-Exempt; hourly (Temporary/Seasonal)

SCHEDULE: Flexible; includes weekends and holidays during peak season


JOB STATEMENT/PURPOSE:

Under the guidance of Cultural Program Managers, Coordinators, and program staff, the Cultural Ambassador and Intern positions play a key role in supporting summer programming and activities for visitors of all ages. Ambassadors and interns will work in various areas across the organization, including Admissions, Tours, Cultural Education, the Ch'k'iqadi Gallery, and Facility and Event Rentals.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Social Enterprise:

• Greet guests upon arrival and provide information on cultural programming.

• Deliver excellent customer service by answering questions and directing guests.

• Ensure that each coach driver turns in a voucher for their passengers.

• Maintain the office manual outlining ticketing and admissions staff responsibilities.

• Assist with end-of-day reconciliation for admissions.

• Supports retail sales in the Ch'k'iqadi Gallery.

• Provide support for Facility and Event rentals when necessary.

Tour Guide:

• Welcome and greet guests participating in the tour.

• Share clear and accurate information about Alaska Native traditions, history of the major regions, and village sites.

• Ensure guest comfort and safety during the tour.

• Handle sensitive questions regarding Alaska Native history and culture with professionalism, educating guests as needed.

• Monitor tour groups, ensuring they stay together and avoid damaging property.

Cultural Education:

• Facilitate educational opportunities that highlight traditional Alaska Native subsistence, arts, plants, hunting, dancing, storytelling, and games.

• Provide Alaskan Map introductions.

• Provide ANHC Overviews.

• Participate in dance performances or games demonstrations.

• Perform additional duties assigned to support business needs.

ESSENTIAL SKILLS:

• Strong verbal and written communication skills.

• Excellent customer service, problem-solving, and critical thinking abilities.

• Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to take initiative, work as part of a team, and manage multiple tasks effectively.

• Flexibility to adapt to changing priorities and work environments.

• Have a strong understanding of the culture they represent to ensure they represent the culture accurately.

• Knowledge of ANHC's mission, history, and direction or a willingness to undergo training.

• A positive attitude, enthusiasm for learning, and a helpful approach to work.

• Reliable attendance, punctuality, and dependability.

• Uphold high standards of honesty, integrity, and responsibility.

• Willingness to work weekends and holidays as required during the summer season, acknowledging ANHC operates seven days a week.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORKING CONDITIONS:

Weather:

• Indoors: Primarily in an environmentally controlled office.

• Outdoors: Ability to work outside in all weather conditions typical for Anchorage Alaska Summers.

Noise level:

• Quiet to moderate.

Physical requirements:

• Employees are required to lift and/or move up to 50 lbs.

• Frequently required to sit, stand, walk, use hands/fingers to handle or feel, climb, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, talk/hear, see, taste/smell, and carry weight/lift.

INTERN MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

• Passion for ANHC's mission and values and a desire to learn more about Alaska Native Culture and history.

• Must be currently enrolled as a high school student.
