What is a weekend customs entry writer?

Weekend Customs Entry Writers are professionals responsible for preparing and submitting documentation required to clear imported and exported goods through customs over the weekend. They work with importers, exporters, and government agencies to ensure compliance with all regulations and facilitate the smooth movement of goods. Their duties often include classifying goods, calculating duties and taxes, and communicating with clients and customs officials. Working on weekends, they help companies maintain continuous supply chain operations, especially during non-standard business hours.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a weekend customs entry writer?

To thrive as a Weekend Customs Entry Writer, you need a strong understanding of import/export regulations, classification codes, and customs documentation, typically supported by experience in logistics or freight forwarding. Familiarity with customs brokerage software such as Descartes, ACE, or similar systems, and, in some cases, a customs broker license, are commonly required. Attention to detail, excellent organizational skills, and effective communication are standout soft skills for managing documentation and client interactions under tight deadlines. These skills ensure accurate and timely customs clearance, regulatory compliance, and efficient client service during critical weekend operations.

Managing high volumes of entries, ensuring accurate classification, and resolving last-minute documentation issues can be common challenges. Proactive communication with clients and carriers, staying organized, and maintaining up-to-date knowledge of regulations can help overcome these obstacles.
