Position Summary

We are seeking a dependable Lead Custodian responsible for maintaining a clean, sanitary, safe, and regulatory-compliant environment for students and staff. This is a hands-on, working supervisor role responsible for daily cleaning, maintaining high standards across the facility, and working alongside another custodian to ensure consistent quality.

This role ensures that all cleaning practices meet or exceed standards set by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Environmental Protection Agency, and the Alabama Department of Public Health.


Key ResponsibilitiesCleaning, Disinfection & Sanitation
  • Clean and disinfect classrooms, hallways, offices, restrooms, and common areas using EPA-approved disinfectants
  • Follow CDC-defined cleaning and disinfecting protocols
  • Sanitize high-touch surfaces (door handles, desks, switches, railings) multiple times daily
  • Maintain restroom sanitation using appropriate disinfectants
  • Perform floor care: sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, and machine scrubbing
  • Ensure proper waste disposal procedures are followed
Health, Safety & Compliance
  • Adhere to OSHA safety standards, including PPE usage and hazard communication
  • Maintain SDS documentation and compliant chemical storage
  • Use appropriate PPE (gloves, eye protection where required)
  • Identify and address hazards immediately (spills, leaks, damage)
  • Support infection prevention protocols during illness or seasonal health concerns
Quality Assurance & Inspection
  • Conduct daily facility inspections using a standardized checklist
  • Ensure all areas meet cleanliness and sanitation standards
  • Document completed work and report deficiencies
  • Maintain consistent standards across all shifts
Team Leadership & Coordination
  • Coordinate daily cleaning responsibilities with custodial staff
  • Support alignment between daytime and evening cleaning teams

Equipment & Supply Oversight
  • Operate custodial equipment safely and effectively
  • Ensure all chemicals are properly labeled, stored, and approved for school use
  • Monitor inventory and communicate supply needs
Event Support
  • Assist with setup and cleanup for school events
  • Ensure spaces are cleaned and reset to operational standards
Knowledge and skills required:
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Previous custodial or maintenance experience required.
  • Must possess a valid Alabama driver's license and be able to travel locally if needed for supplies, etc.
  • Working knowledge of school cleaning techniques, safety procedures, and proper use of custodial equipment.
  • Ability to lift 50-100 pounds occasionally, 25-50 pounds frequently, and 10-20 pounds regularly.
  • Ability to walk and stand for prolonged periods (approximately 95% of work shift).
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work independently and prioritize multiple tasks.
  • Positive attitude and communication skills to work with operations manager and maintenance team.
