Job Summary: Cashiers are responsible for providing excellent customer service to all guests at the Point of Sale (POS). They ensure each customer leaves Pete's Fresh Market with an outstanding experience, while delivering fast, friendly, and accurate transactions. They must maintain proper control of cash, ensure customer satisfaction, and safeguard company assets. This position requires adhering to all procedural guidelines set by the Front End Department and the company. As a team member of Pete's Fresh Market it is important that Pete's Four Pillars of Value, Aesthetic, Quality, and Customer Service are always exemplified.
Essential Job Responsibilities
  • Must have a complete knowledge of all produce codes, bakery codes and an extensive understanding of weekly sale items, company coupon policy, and other store policies required during check-out.
  • Issues receipts, refunds, credits, rain checks or change due to customers.
  • Receives payment by cash, check, credit cards, gift cards, or automatic debits.
  • Operates cash register by passing price coded items across electronic scanner to record price, enter in PLU or UPC manually, compile printed list, and display cost of customer purchase, tax, and rebates on monitor screen.
  • Maintains clean and orderly checkout areas and make sure no personnel items are in the area.
  • Ensures all service standards are frequently met and often exceed company expectations.
  • Assist with actual store operation activities such as stocking shelves, assisting with customers, and cleaning, depending upon business needs.
  • Assist baggers in bagging groceries; depending on store needs.
  • Must possess the knowledge and skills to understand how to effectively use the POS system; including but not limited to transactions involving WIC coupons, manufacturer coupons, EBT, cash, check, and debit card purchases.
  • Responsible for an accurate account of all tendered cash, credit, check, EBT, coupon, gift certificate, etc. that are processed through their register.
  • Must accurately balance their assigned cash drawer at the end of their shift.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education/Certifications
  • High School Diploma or G.E.D. with 0-3 years of experience in grocery store or similar retail environment.
  • Must have a valid and up to date Food Handler's Certificate.
  • Must have above average cash handling and basic math/calculating skills.

Other Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Must be capable of providing and modeling exceptional customer service.
  • Must have excellent communication skills in order to communicate effectively with customers, store leadership, and fellow-team members.
  • Must be detail oriented, self-motivated, and able to work independently or in groups.

Work Environment/ Physical Demands
  • Must have the physical ability to stand for extended periods of time, bend, climb, balance, stoop to grasp objects, kneel, crouch, crawl, frequently push/pull up to 100 lbs., frequently lift and/or move loads up to 50 lbs., and occasionally lift 75 lbs.
  • Occasional high stress when dealing with systems/customers/staff.
  • Able to work a flexible schedule with various shifts, including weekends and holidays, as determined by the store/business needs and as required to ensure adequate store staffing.
  • Must have reliable source of transportation.

Starting hourly rates will be no less than the local minimum wage and will vary based on things like location, experience, and qualifications. All positions are eligible for Overtime, and some positions will have guaranteed Overtime available.
Hourly rate for Suburban Stores is $15-$18
Hourly rate for City of Chicago Stores is $17.05-$18
