Director of Music -Mount Vernon Presbyterian Church
 

Director of Music Position

Description: To coordinate the music and worship life of the MVPC in collaboration with the Pastor.

Summary: This is a part-time salaried position. The salary range is $15-20K.  Responsibilities include 10-15 hours of work each week with one Sunday off per month in coordination with the Organist/Accompanist.

Music Responsibilities:

  • Rehearse and direct the church choir, preparing them to sing during worship 2-3 times per month
  • Recruit soloists and ensembles from inside and/or outside of the congregation.
  • Work with the Pastor and Organist/Accompanist to incorporate a variety of music to enhance worship.
  • Ensure musical support for worship services every Sunday, particularly those weeks when the Director and/or Organist are off.  
  • Schedule and rehearse “special music” (eg: soloists or instrumental music) for worship services at least once per month.
  • Secure substitute musicians as needed.

Administrative Responsibilities: 

  • Work closely and cooperatively with the pastor, the Organist/Accompanist, and Office Manager to coordinate the worship life of MVPC.
  • Attend all Worship Ministry Team meetings (usually virtual).
  • In consultation with the Organist/Accompanist, recommend necessary instrument maintenance.
  • Submit music fund expenses to the Office Manager promptly.
  • Submit annual recommendations for music program expenditures to the Worship Ministry Team for consideration during the budget process.

Qualifications:

  • A vibrant and growing relationship with God and a commitment to the way of Jesus Christ.  
  • Ability to accompany congregation on piano (or organ) when accompanist is off (one weekend per month).
  • An interest in a variety of musical styles to continue moving the congregation beyond hymns and traditional Church music.  
  • Effective interpersonal skills, organizational ability, and creativity. 
  • Formal instrumental and/or choral training required. Bachelor of Music desired.
