Job Description
Starting hiring salary - $16.00 to $16.96 hourly
DEFINITION
Perform a wide variety of semi-skilled duties in the construction, maintenance, and repair of City parks, recreational ball fields, cemeteries, and landscaped areas; perform skilled landscape maintenance. This position must work well independently and with teams, while providing customer service and human relations skills which support the City of Brighton's mission and values. EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
Waters, mows, weeds, trims, renovates and fertilizes lawns.
Plants, waters, and maintains landscaped areas consisting of bushes, trees, flowers, shrubs, and lawns.
Trims and prunes bushes, trees and shrubs; stake trees as necessary; Applies herbicides, fungicides, and pesticides safely; maintains records of fertilizers and chemicals used.
Performs a variety of duties in the maintenance and repair of the City's irrigation system; changes and adjusts heads; maintains controllers; participates in large irrigation system installation and maintenance projects.
Performs Playground Safety Inspections on a regular basis.
Maintains and cleans restrooms and shelters daily, empties trash, and performs trail maintenance.
Assists in constructing and installing athletic, cemetery, and playground equipment including fencing, bleachers picnic tables, and concrete walkways and decking.
Sets up on-site as lowering device, tents and signage to grave sites; back fills grave space, tamp, level and sod; places flowers in an orderly fashion; cleans site; installs memorials, foundations and vases; repairs and replaces foundations and borders.
Operates park maintenance equipment such as dump trucks, backhoes, front loaders, and power tools such as mowers, edger's and blowers; maintains hand tools and assigned equipment. Training provided.
Rakes leaves and clears debris from walks, fields, courts and other facilities.
Perform all aspects of ballfield maintenance. Setup fields, maintain traditional and artificial baseball/softball fields, paint athletic fields, etc
Identifies equipment needs for each assigned project.
Utilizes proper safety precautions related to work performed; Performs snow removal duties as required.
Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
Current methods, techniques and tools and the operational characteristics of mechanical equipment used in the construction and maintenance of landscaped areas and park facilities.
Uses and purposes of general construction tools and equipment.
Safe work practices.
Ability to:
Perform semi-skilled maintenance, construction and repair work in parks, cemeteries, and other planted areas.
Operate a variety of vehicular and stationary mechanical equipment in a safe and effective manner in routine situations.
Effectively lead other workers as assigned.
Work independently in the absence of supervision.
Identify and correct landscape problems early in their development.
Use and operate hand tools, mechanical equipment, and power tools and equipment required for the work in a safe and efficient manner.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, supervisors and the public.
WORK SHIFTS
Multiple work shifts are available. The primary workday is, 7:00am to 3:00pm, Monday through Friday. However, the Park's department supports multiple shifts, including weekend shifts (Saturday and Sunday) from 5:00am to 1:00pm or flexible work weeks. A prospective employee does not have to work 5 days a week, we accept part-time help as well, it is preferred that the work shift is still 8 hours, but the number of days worked during the week is flexible. (i.e., 3 days a week)
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
High School diploma or equivalent preferred. One (1) year of experience in parks, cemetery, landscaping, or closely related field preferred but not required.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Must have the ability to perform heavy manual labor: shoveling, digging, lifting, pushing, pulling, and dragging. Lift and carry up to 80 pounds. Stoop, bend, and crouch for extended periods of time. Work in confined spaces. Work in extreme temperature conditions including extreme heat (>100 degrees) and extreme cold (<10 degrees).
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Possession of a valid Colorado driver's license with safe driving record.
Bilingual English/Spanish preferred.
