Job description

We are seeking experienced Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants for a 13-week Cardiothoracic Surgery locum assignment at a Level I academic medical center. This opportunity is ideal for experienced cardiac surgery first assists with expertise in endoscopic vein harvesting (EVH) and complex adult cardiac procedures.

Assignment Details

  • 13-week assignment
  • Scheduled shifts with rotating call

Schedule

  • Regular shift: 6:00 AM–6:30 PM
  • Weeknight call: 6:00 PM–6:00 AM (1 night per week)
  • Weekend call: 6:00 AM–6:00 AM (rotating)
  • Monthly schedule provided by the facility

Practice Setting

  • Academic Medical Center
  • Cardiothoracic/Cardiac Surgery Operating Room
  • Adult patient population
  • Epic EMR

Clinical Responsibilities

  • OR First Assist for adult cardiac surgery
  • Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (CABG)
  • Aortic, mitral, and tricuspid valve repair and replacement
  • Ascending aortic surgery
  • Left atrial appendage exclusion
  • Maze procedures
  • Redo sternotomies
  • Mechanical circulatory support procedures (Impella, ECMO cannulation, IABP exposure)
  • Endoscopic Vein Harvesting (EVH)
  • Sternotomy opening and closure
  • Chest tube placement
  • Temporary pacing wire placement

Program Details

  • Approximately 517 pump cases annually
  • Maquet EVH System utilized

Team Structure

  • 5 Cardiac Surgeons
  • Intensivist
  • Multidisciplinary cardiac surgery team

Requirements

  • Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant
  • Board Certified
  • Active Missouri license or willingness to obtain one
  • Minimum 2 years of independent adult cardiac surgery OR first assist experience
  • Trauma Level I experience required
  • Epic experience required
  • BLS required
  • NPs: RNFA preferred

Credentialing

  • Temporary privileges may be available

Ideal Candidate

An experienced Cardiothoracic Surgery NP or PA with independent first assist experience in adult cardiac surgery, including EVH and complex open-heart procedures, who thrives in a high-volume academic operating room environment.
