What is weekend bookkeeping?

Weekend bookkeeping refers to the practice of performing accounting and record-keeping tasks specifically during the weekends. This role is often suited for businesses that need to update their financial records outside of regular business hours or for individuals who want to balance bookkeeping work with other weekday commitments. Weekend bookkeepers handle tasks such as tracking expenses, processing invoices, reconciling bank statements, and preparing financial reports. This job requires attention to detail, proficiency with accounting software, and a solid understanding of basic bookkeeping principles.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a weekend bookkeeper, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Weekend Bookkeeper, you need a solid understanding of accounting principles, attention to detail, and experience with bookkeeping processes, often supported by an associate degree or relevant certification. Proficiency in accounting software such as QuickBooks, Microsoft Excel, and familiarity with payroll or invoicing systems is typically required. Strong organizational skills, time management, and the ability to communicate financial information clearly are essential soft skills. These abilities ensure accurate financial records, efficient weekend operations, and effective collaboration with clients or team members.

What are some common challenges faced by weekend bookkeepers, and how can they be addressed?

Weekend bookkeepers often face the challenge of managing time-sensitive tasks within a shorter work window. Since they may not have immediate access to colleagues or supervisors, clear communication and thorough documentation are crucial for smooth operations. Staying organized and using bookkeeping software effectively helps streamline workflows and ensures that records are up to date for the next business week. Building strong relationships with the team during weekdays and setting clear expectations can also help minimize misunderstandings and improve collaboration.

Job description

We are FINE. We help companies be their best selves. And we use the power of brand to make big happen. Plus, we're nice.
Help us take FINE to the next level!
FINE is looking for a Full-Charge Bookkeeper & HR Benefits Lead to manage our day-to-day accounting operations while serving as the primary lead for employee benefits and people support. This role offers the flexibility to work on-site, fully remote, or a hybrid combination of both, with occasional periodic visits to our office as needed.
Here's where it gets interesting ... you're one of those 'balanced brain' people. You're not just a numbers person; you're a people person too. This position is responsible for managing the day-to-day accounting operations while serving as the primary point of contact for employee benefits and related HR administration. You'll interact with FINE leaders, project managers, and staff, and experience some contact with clients and vendors.
In addition to hands-on bookkeeping responsibilities, you'll supervise one employee, provide direction and support, review their work for accuracy, and help ensure accounting and administrative processes are completed efficiently and consistently.
Our ideal candidate is a highly organized, detail-oriented, approachable professional who thrives working independently, maintains strict confidentiality, and balances financial rigor with people-focused support.
Essential Functions
Accounting & Bookkeeping
  • Oversee the complete accounting cycle, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, bank reconciliations, general ledger maintenance, month-end close, and financial reporting.
  • Support project managers with accounting-related tasks such as monthly billings and work-in-process calculations.
  • Monitor and report on cash flow.
  • Maintain accurate records of fixed assets, prepaid expenses, accruals, and other balance sheet accounts.
  • Identify discrepancies, investigate variances, and resolve accounting issues promptly.
  • Maintain appropriate internal controls and financial documentation.
  • Prepare information and supporting documentation for tax filings, audits, and outside accountants.
  • Assist with annual censuses, budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis as needed.

Payroll & HR Administration
  • Coordinate payroll processing and ensure payroll information is accurate and submitted on time.
  • Maintain accurate employee records related to compensation, deductions, benefits, and employment status.
  • Coordinate with payroll providers and other HR vendors.
  • Maintain confidentiality of employee, payroll, financial, and benefits information.

Employee Benefits Administration
  • Serve as the primary contact for employees regarding company benefit programs, including health, dental, vision, life, disability, retirement, and other company-sponsored programs, as applicable.
  • Assist with onboarding and offboarding processes, including benefits enrollment and termination requirements.
  • Reconcile benefit invoices and payroll deductions to ensure accuracy.
  • Coordinate annual open enrollment activities and employee communications.

HR Support & Compliance
  • Assist with updating employee policies, procedures, and HR documentation.
  • Support management with employee-related administrative needs.
  • Work with payroll provider, benefits broker, insurance carriers, HR consultants, retirement plan providers, and other benefit vendors to resolve issues.
  • Assist with compliance-related requirements, notices, filings, and documentation associated with employee benefit programs.
  • Stay informed about changes affecting company benefit plans and communicate relevant information to management and employees.
  • Maintain a high level of confidentiality when handling sensitive employee and company information.

Qualifications
  • Financial & HR Expertise: 3-5+ years of full-cycle bookkeeping, financial reporting, payroll processing, and benefits administration.
  • Technical Skills: Proficient with QuickBooks Online, Excel, and Google Sheets.
  • Professional Attributes: Highly organized, detail-oriented, effective collaborator, adaptable across tight deadlines, and trusted with sensitive data.

Next-Level Qualifications
  • Agency Experience: Background in creative agency operations.
  • Software: Experience with Rippling (HRIS/payroll) or Harvest (time tracking).
  • Education: Associate or Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Business (or equivalent experience).
FINE Benefits
At FINE, we're committed to the happiness and well-being of our employees and aim to create a workplace that fosters both personal and professional growth. Our benefits include, but are not limited to:
  • Compensation range: $80,000 - $90,000 per year
  • Flexible work environment
  • Health, dental, and vision insurance
  • 401k retirement plan with company contribution
  • Professional development funds
  • Paid Vacation, sick time, ten company-paid holidays, and our annual holiday close
