Portledge School was founded in 1965 and is located on the beautiful North Shore of Long Island. Approximately fifty minutes from NYC by train, Portledge is nestled on a pastoral 63-acre tree-lined campus that is known for its cherry blossoms in spring. Job Description:

Portledge School is seeking an experienced, collaborative, and mission-aligned Junior Varsity Boys Basketball Coach to lead its JV basketball team while working closely with the Varsity Boys Basketball Coach to build and strengthen the overall basketball program. The ideal candidate will help create a unified program vision that supports student-athlete development, skill progression, team culture, and long-term program success across all levels.

The coach will be responsible for developing a competitive, inclusive, and values-based team that reflects Portledge’s Mission and Pillars: Kindness, Purpose, Honor, and Respect. This role requires the ability to mentor student-athletes of varied skill levels, foster a positive and growth-oriented team environment, communicate effectively with students, families, and colleagues, and represent the school with integrity within the PSAA and NYSAIS leagues.




Responsibilities and Duties:
  • Develop and implement training plans, skill development, and game strategies that support student-athletes of diverse ability levels and contribute to the long-term success of the basketball program.

  • Work collaboratively with the Varsity Boys Basketball Coach and Athletics Department to build a cohesive and developmentally aligned basketball program across all levels.

  • Create a positive, disciplined, and inclusive team culture aligned with Portledge’s Mission, Pillars, and NYSAIS standards.

  • Plan and lead organized practices, team meetings, and competitive game preparation focused on player development, teamwork, and sportsmanship.

  • Provide meaningful mentorship to student-athletes, fostering growth both on and off the court.

  • Support the growth of the basketball program by helping identify and develop mission-aligned student-athletes and serving as a positive ambassador for Portledge Athletics.

  • Communicate consistently and professionally with players, families, colleagues, and school leadership regarding expectations, schedules, and student-athlete progress.

  • Collaborate with the Athletics Department on equipment, uniforms, transportation, scheduling, and game-day operations.

  • Ensure compliance with all PSAA and NYSAIS rules, regulations, and school policies.

  • Attend and supervise all practices, games, team events, and assigned athletic department responsibilities.

  • Utilize game and practice film (e.g., Hudl) to support player development, team improvement, and strategic planning.

Qualifications and Skills:
  • Previous coaching experience, preferably at the high school level level.

  • Strong understanding of basketball fundamentals and team-building strategies.

  • Ability to inspire and connect with student-athletes of varying skill levels.

  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and organizational skills.

  • High level of integrity and professionalism in representing the school and athletic program.

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred (in education, sports management, or a related field).

  • Availability for evening and weekend commitments, including travel for away games.

  • Experience with video analysis tools (e.g., Hudl) is a plus.

  • Commitment to upholding the values of an independent school community.

Season:

Practice will start approximately around November 1, 2026 and end approximately around March 15, 2027.
