What kinds of projects or responsibilities can a Weekend Architect expect to handle during weekend hours?

Weekend Architects often focus on project tasks such as drafting plans, creating design presentations, meeting with clients who are only available outside standard business hours, and collaborating remotely with project teams. These responsibilities may include revising construction documents, addressing last-minute design changes, or preparing deliverables for upcoming deadlines. Working weekends can provide unique flexibility and the chance to support boutique firms, consulting roles, or clients with urgent needs. This structure is well-suited for experienced professionals seeking part-time engagement, freelancers, or those balancing other weekday commitments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Weekend Architect position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Weekend Architect, you need strong architectural design skills, proficiency in building codes, and typically a bachelor's or master's degree in architecture along with licensure. Familiarity with CAD/BIM software (such as AutoCAD or Revit), and project management tools are commonly required. Excellent time management, communication, and client-relations skills set top candidates apart, especially when juggling condensed project timelines. These skills ensure you can efficiently deliver high-quality architectural solutions and collaborate effectively, even when focusing your efforts on weekends.

Are architects currently in demand?

Architects are generally in steady demand, especially in regions with ongoing construction, urban development, and infrastructure projects. The profession requires strong design skills, knowledge of building codes, and proficiency with CAD software, and employment opportunities can vary based on economic conditions and regional development activity.

Do architects work on the weekend?

Architects often work on weekends to meet project deadlines, especially during critical phases of design or construction. However, their schedules can vary depending on the firm, project demands, and personal work-life balance preferences.

What is a Weekend Architect job?

A Weekend Architect is a professional who works primarily on weekends to design, plan, and oversee architectural projects. This role is ideal for those who have weekday commitments but want to contribute their expertise on a part-time basis. Weekend Architects may be involved in drafting blueprints, consulting with clients, or coordinating with project teams. Their focus is often on smaller projects, renovations, or design consulting. This job allows flexibility while still leveraging architectural skills.

Does it take 7 years to be an architect?

Becoming a licensed architect typically requires about 5 to 7 years of education and experience, including completing a professional degree in architecture, gaining relevant work experience through internships, and passing the Architect Registration Examination. The exact timeline can vary depending on the individual's educational path and state licensing requirements.

What is the hourly wage for an architect?

The hourly wage for an architect typically ranges from $30 to $70, depending on experience, location, and specialization. Entry-level architects usually earn lower rates, while experienced professionals or those with specialized skills can command higher wages. Many architects work full-time, with some freelance or consulting roles paying hourly rates based on project scope.

Job description

Market: All Markets
Location: Raleigh, NC
Reports to: TBD
FLSA: Exempt
Work Mode: Monday – Friday; 8:00 – 5:00; In-Office Monday – Thursday; Hybrid (remote or in-office) Friday
Employment Type: Full-time
At BHDP, we believe great design does more than define spaces—it influences behavior, drives performance, and creates meaningful experiences. Guided by our purpose to Inspire People and Impact Results, By Design, we collaborate across architecture, interiors, strategy, and research to solve complex challenges in integrated ways. Here, your ideas matter, your voice is heard, and your work has the power to shape experiences that truly make a difference.
Role Summary
The Architect III is a strong technical leader who elevates project outcomes through disciplined coordination, clear documentation, and mentorship. This role helps translate design intent into buildable, well-coordinated deliverables by anticipating risk, aligning consultants and internal teams, and driving quality and consistency—supporting successful results for clients and project teams.
Responsibilities
  • Leads effort to deliver results across multiple projects, ensuring consistent quality, coordination, and milestone readiness while carrying design intent, Success Criteria, and code/life-safety strategy through to constructible drawings and spec intent.
  • Drives issues to verified closure through active QA/QC (self and team) and documented cross-discipline coordination to prevent recurrence at later milestones and during CA.
  • Breaks projects into clear work assignments and follows up to ensure timely, complete, high-quality delivery.
  • Coaches and delegates through actionable redlines/markups, feedback and brief check-ins to drive project quality to verified closure, with fewer repeat errors, improved cycle time, and increased independence across the team.
  • Identifies complex coordination, constructability, and code/life-safety issues early, and develops options with creativity and clear trade-offs tied to Success Criteria, design intent, and project constraints.
  • Escalates high-risk items, documents key decisions, drives consistent implementation across the deliverables, and converts lessons learned into reusable improvements that prevent recurrence.
  • Works with others and cooperates effectively with the project team and consultants to reconcile design intent with constructable, coordinated deliverables, while communicating clear status, roadblocks, and next steps with predictable follow-through.
  • Provides actionable peer review input and ensures review comments are tracked and closed prior to issuance.
  • Maintains a rolling look-ahead across projects, prioritizes effectively, and keeps assigned teams and deliverables milestone-ready without last-minute delivery.
  • Identifies scope/schedule risks early with clear recovery options and protects fee and schedule by reducing rework through early coordination and disciplined QA/QC follow-through to confirmed completion.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Architecture degree (NAAB accredited program preferred)
  • 9+ years in the design and/or architecture industry
  • Licensed Architect
  • Advanced Revit knowledge – independently deliver defined drawing packages/projects and teach others on best practice.
  • Advanced knowledge of production-ready visualization capabilities (SketchUp, Enscape, Lumion).
  • Demonstrated capability to delegate, coach, and raise team performance
  • Demonstrated initiative; sees challenges as opportunities
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Strong communication and collaboration within a team
  • Models professional workplace behaviors: reliable follow-through, constructive feedback, and calm, solutions-oriented communication with co-workers and clients
Physical and Mental Demands
  • Sustained attention to detail
  • Sitting/standing
  • Occasional lifting of 20 pounds or less
  • Ability to work in an open office environment
Life at BHDP
Our comprehensive benefit package includes a competitive salary, medical, dental, vision, disability, flexible spending accounts, paid holidays, paid time off, and a 401(k), which aligns with our commitment to rewarding our high-performing professionals.
