Weekend Application Developer information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a weekend application developer?

To thrive as a Weekend Application Developer, you need proficiency in programming languages (such as Java, Python, or JavaScript), software development principles, and a relevant degree or coding certifications. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, cloud platforms, and development frameworks is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, time management, and effective remote communication are essential soft skills. These skills enable you to efficiently deliver high-quality software solutions while collaborating with teams or clients in a condensed weekend timeframe.

What are the common challenges faced by weekend application developers, and how can they be addressed?

Weekend Application Developers often face the challenge of limited collaboration with full-time team members, since much of the team may not be available during weekends. To address this, clear communication and thorough documentation are essential, ensuring that work transitions smoothly between shifts. Additionally, weekend developers may need to be more self-sufficient, managing issues independently and coordinating progress updates for handoffs. Regular check-ins with the weekday team and using collaborative tools can help bridge any gaps and maintain project momentum.

What is a weekend application developer?

Weekend Application Developers are software professionals who focus on designing, coding, testing, and maintaining applications during weekends or outside standard business hours. These roles are often filled by individuals who support ongoing projects, address urgent technical issues, or contribute to development tasks that require off-hours attention. Employers may hire weekend developers to ensure continuous progress on projects, minimize downtime, or provide 24/7 support for critical systems. This position typically requires strong programming skills, familiarity with development tools, and the ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

"This position is for full-time, onsite employment at the Family Dollar Chesapeake VA Store Support Center."
Summary of Position (Job Purpose)
We are looking for a skilled Mobile Application Developer to join our growing technology software development team. The ideal candidate will have a minimum of 3+ years of experience as a mobile application developer. In this role, you will design, architect, and build highly performing mobile applications across both iOS and Android platforms. You will collaborate closely with UI/UX designers and backend engineers to turn beautiful wireframes into smooth, responsive, and secure user experiences.
This role is responsible for the development and code quality for the Family Dollar Mobile Application in collaboration with the Digital Product Manager for Mobile Applications. The Developer needs to be highly collaborative, well organized, with strong communication & problem-solving skills. The ideal candidate should also have Management experience to lead individual contributor(s), contractors & vendors as the role evolves over time to include additional digital responsibilities.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
  • Cross-Platform Development: Build pixel-perfect, buttery-smooth user interfaces across iOS and Android apps using React Native.
  • Native API Integration: Leverage native APIs and build custom bridges to connect JavaScript with native iOS (Swift) and Android (Kotlin) code when necessary.
  • Performance Optimization: Diagnose bottlenecks and fix performance flaws to ensure applications match native-speed responsiveness.
  • State Management: Implement clean architectures using modern state management libraries.
  • API Consumption: Integrate backend RESTful or GraphQL APIs and handle complex asynchronous workflows.
  • App Store Management: Oversee deployment pipelines and manage submissions to the Apple App Store and Google Play Console.
  • Code Quality Assurance: Maintain clean, documented code and write automated testing suites to protect app stability.
  • Code Review: Review and validate the code that is being developed by the support team.

This is not to be considered a complete list of job duties, as they may be amended or added to as needed.
Minimum Requirements/Qualifications
  • Expert proficiency in JavaScript (ES6+) and TypeScript.
  • Complete understanding of the React Native ecosystem, hooks, and component life cycles.
  • Practical experience setting up complex routing patterns with React Navigation.
  • Solid grasp of Redux Toolkit, Zustand, or Context API.
  • Comfort working with platform tools like Android Studio, and Xcode.
  • Proficiency with automated testing frameworks such as Browserstack.
  • Experience with CI/CD tools tailored for mobile automation, such as GitLab Actions.
  • Mastery of Git workflows and repository management.
  • Experience with mobile monitoring and debugging tools such as Firebase Crashlytics or similar.
  • Experience implementing push notifications and deep linking.
  • Experience in integrating mobile applications with eCommerce, loyalty, authentication, and enterprise backend systems.
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, Mobile Development, or equivalent technical field.
  • 3+ years of professional mobile app development experience.
  • Prior background migrating existing web applications (React.js) into mobile environments.
  • Familiarity with offline data storage strategies and local synchronization databases like SQLite or Realm.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong leadership skills, with the ability to motivate, mentor and develop team members
  • Knowledge of Oracle Commerce a plus
