Job Summary

The Power Trader is responsible for minimizing the net cost of serving WEC Energy Group retail and wholesale electric load obligations primarily through maximizing the value of the WEC Energy Group's owned and contracted generation resources while supporting reliable operations of the bulk electric system.

This position requires unescorted access to certain critical cyber assets which would require applicants to satisfy all company and NERC Critical Infrastructure Protection Standard 004 security requirements, which includes a background investigation. 

The Power Trader is part of a job family (Power Trader, Principal Power Trader) where experience will be the determining factor. 

Job Responsibilities

NOTE: The person in this position is considered a Marketing Function Employee for the purposes of the Wisconsin Electric - American Transmission Company Standards of Conduct Agreement. 

  • Continuously evaluate company-owned and contracted generator availability and performance and maintain and update generation resource offers, in order to maximize the value of these assets in both the Day Ahead and Real Time markets
  • Support North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC), Reliability First (RFC) and Midwest Reliability Organization (MRO) and Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO) reliability requirements (Operating Reserve, Regulating Reserve, Control Performance Standard, Balancing Authority Area Control Error Limit, etc.)
  • Dispatch owned and contracted generation resources in real time (24x7) to support reliability in an economic and safe manner
  • Use load forecasting applications, weather forecasting services, weather and load history, and experience to forecast system loads
  • Create demand bids using load forecasts, market price forecasts for Day Ahead and Real Time markets, projected generator availability and commitments, projected net position, transmission system topology expectations derived from available information and experience, and in consideration of interrelationships with Financial Transmission Rights and generation asset values
  • Use pricing, operating, and market-driven tactics to create and optimize the WEC Energy Group net asset portfolio (load assets, generation assets, financial transmission rights, and other financial instruments) while maintaining compliance with Independent Market Monitor rules and requirements
  • Work closely with personnel in Electric System Operations and Green Bay Remote Operations to reliably and economically dispatch WEC Energy Group generation
  • Communicate frequently with personnel in Electric System Operations, Green Bay Remote Operations and power plants and with the Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO) and the American Transmission Company (ATC) and other business partners as needed
  • Coordinate unit availability, maintenance requirements, and outage requirements for owned and contracted generation in a reliable and cost-effective manner. 
  • Develop an understanding of various energy resources as the WEC Energy Group fleet incorporates new, complex technologies, including solar and battery resources, under the efficiency, sustainability and growth (ESG) initiative and generation reshaping plan (GRP)
  • Operate multiple computer applications for market operations, settlement, planning, monitoring and reporting purposes
  • Develop and maintain an in-depth understanding of MISO operations and settlement business practices, rules and procedures, NERC reliability standards, and RFC/MRO reliability requirements. May participate in oversight of market operations activities of WEC Infrastructure (WECI) projects in MISO and other markets and/or conduct market operations activities for WECI projects
  • Understand and perform job duties consistent with FERC rules and tariffs, including the Standards of Conduct and MISO Market Monitoring and Mitigation
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree, or in lieu of a degree, a minimum of 5 years' experience in generation, bulk electric system operations, and/or wholesale electric markets
  • Strong analytical and computer skills
  • Thrive in a fast paced, continuously changing work environment and have the ability to deal with stressful situations effectively and make quick decisions, sometimes with limited information
  • NERC system operator certification required or the ability to obtain certification within six (6) months
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with a 24/7 work environment
  • Formal or informal leadership experience
  • Experience in or familiarity with MISO or other regional transmission organization/independent system operator market operations
  • Experience in the wholesale electric market

Pay Range Minimum:  $104,083.72 

Pay Range Maximum:  $179,544.04 

The pay range reflects the minimum and maximum for the position at the time of posting and may be modified in the future. The starting salary/pay within the pay range will be based on several factors, as applicable, but not limited to, relevant education, qualifications, certifications, experience, skills, geographic location, shift, travel requirements, collective bargaining agreements, and business and organizational needs.  At WEC Energy Group, it is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the range for their role.
