Website Development Intern information

What does a website development intern do?

A Website Development Intern assists in designing, building, and maintaining websites under the guidance of senior developers. Their tasks may include coding using HTML, CSS, JavaScript, or other web technologies, testing website features, fixing bugs, and helping update website content. Interns also gain experience with web development tools and frameworks, collaborate with team members, and learn about best practices in web design and user experience. The role is designed to provide hands-on learning while contributing to real-world projects.

What is the difference between Website Development Intern vs Web Developer?

The main difference between a Website Development Intern and a Web Developer lies in experience, responsibilities, and employment status. Interns are usually students or recent graduates gaining hands-on experience under supervision, while Web Developers are experienced professionals handling full projects independently. Internships serve as a stepping stone into the industry, whereas Web Developers are responsible for creating, maintaining, and optimizing websites in a professional capacity.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a website development intern?

To thrive as a Website Development Intern, you generally need foundational knowledge of HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and familiarity with web design principles, often supported by coursework or relevant certifications. Experience using development tools such as Visual Studio Code, Git, and content management systems (CMS) like WordPress is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication help interns collaborate and adapt in dynamic team environments. These skills ensure the intern can contribute to web projects efficiently, learn quickly, and support the team's goals in creating functional, user-friendly websites.

What types of projects and technologies can a website development intern expect to work with during their internship?

As a Website Development Intern, you'll typically work on real-world projects such as building or updating company websites, creating landing pages, or integrating web applications. You'll gain hands-on experience with technologies like HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and popular frameworks such as React or Angular. Interns often collaborate with designers, content creators, and senior developers, which helps you understand how web projects move from concept to launch. This role offers a valuable opportunity to build your portfolio, learn best coding practices, and get feedback from experienced professionals.

How to get an internship in website development?

To secure a website development internship, build a portfolio of projects demonstrating skills in HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and frameworks like React or Angular. Gain experience through online courses, certifications, or freelance work, and apply to internships via company websites, job boards, or networking events. Strong problem-solving skills and familiarity with development tools are also beneficial.

Events & Donor Engagement

  • Assist with planning and coordination of donor events, briefings, and cultivation gatherings
  • Support invitation management, guest tracking, and event follow-up
  • Assist with event logistics and donor communications
  • Provide occasional support for in-person events as needed

Development Communications

  • Assist with donor newsletters, impact reports, stewardship materials, and fundraising communications
  • Support development of donor-facing presentations, one-pagers, and fundraising materials

  • Strong organizational skills and exceptional attention to detail

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Comfortable working independently in a remote environment
  • Proficiency in Google Workspace (Docs, Sheets, Slides, Drive)
  • Interest in fundraising, philanthropy, nonprofit management, and social impact

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience in nonprofit organizations, fundraising, research, events, or administration
  • Experience with donor databases, CRM systems, or fundraising software
  • Familiarity with grant research and proposal development
  • Interest in global health, education, and community-led development
  • Experience organizing systems, spreadsheets, or project management tools

What You'll Gain

  • Hands-on experience in nonprofit fundraising and development
  • Exposure to donor cultivation, stewardship, and relationship-building
  • Experience with prospect research, grants management, and fundraising operations
  • Mentorship from experienced nonprofit fundraising professionals
  • Opportunity to contribute directly to programs improving health and education outcomes globally
  • A portfolio of meaningful projects and systems that continue to support OGT long after your internship concludes
