Your assignments may range from covering local events and interviewing interesting personalities to exploring cultural trends or community issues. You’ll collaborate closely with editors and sometimes photographers or multimedia teams to develop compelling narratives and ensure accuracy. This role offers a great opportunity to build your portfolio while working on diverse topics under editorial guidance.

What are Internship Feature Writers?

Internship Feature Writers are interns who create in-depth, engaging, and well-researched articles, often focusing on human interest stories, profiles, or unique topics for magazines, newspapers, or online publications. They work under the guidance of editorial staff to pitch ideas, conduct interviews, and craft compelling narratives. This role provides hands-on experience in journalism, research, and editorial processes, helping aspiring writers build their portfolios and develop professional skills.

To thrive as an Internship Feature Writer, you need strong writing skills, a keen eye for storytelling, and a background in journalism, communications, or a related field. As an Editor for Community Impact, you'll bring your editorial judgment and newsroom experience to digital and print editions that directly serve the people around you. ABOUT YOU

You'll thrive in this role if you can:

  • Own the entire editorial production process for a monthly newspaper edition with confidence and minimal hand-holding.
  • Drive a steady cadence of timely daily digital content across web and newsletter.
  • Mentor, coach, and elevate reporters - including helping early-career journalists grow into stronger writers and beat reporters.
  • Provide trusted recommendations to the General Manager and Managing Editor on hiring, performance, and staffing decisions for reporters, freelancers, photographers, and interns.
  • Generate sharp, original story ideas and champion them in planning meetings.
  • Investigate, analyze, and interpret newsworthy events to produce reporting that's accurate, engaging, and locally meaningful.
  • Bring a strong visual sensibility to graphics, sidebars, and story packaging.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

  • Build, maintain, and continually deepen a network of news sources and community contacts.
  • Oversee beat coverage as needed, including city councils, school boards, and other public bodies.
  • Conduct interviews in person (and occasionally from the desk) across a range of perspectives to ensure accurate, well-rounded reporting.
  • Hold yourself and your team to the highest standard of accuracy under deadline pressure.
  • Uphold Community Impact's editorial stylebook and AP style across all coverage.
  • Represent the company professionally at networking events and external functions.
  • Shoot photographs for stories as needed.
  • Manage production of editorial content end-to-end.
  • Develop and grow reporters into stronger journalists.
  • Consistently hit monthly print and daily digital deadlines.
  • Master industry-specific software, including content management systems.
  • Take on additional responsibilities as needed in support of the newsroom.
