What is a webops engineer?

Webops Engineers, short for Web Operations Engineers, are IT professionals who manage, maintain, and optimize the infrastructure that supports web applications. They ensure that websites and online services are reliable, scalable, and secure by monitoring servers, automating deployments, and troubleshooting issues. Webops Engineers often work closely with development and operations teams to streamline workflows and improve system performance. Their responsibilities can also include configuring cloud services, managing databases, and implementing best practices for continuous integration and delivery.

What does a webops engineer do?

Webops Engineers play a crucial role in bridging the gap between development and IT operations teams. They work closely with developers to automate deployment pipelines, monitor site performance, and quickly address issues that arise during releases. Collaboration often involves coordinating code rollouts, setting up continuous integration/continuous deployment (CI/CD) systems, and ensuring that infrastructure changes align with both security and scalability requirements. By facilitating open communication and using tools like containerization and orchestration platforms, Webops Engineers help ensure that website updates and maintenance occur seamlessly.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a webops engineer?

To thrive as a Webops Engineer, you need a solid understanding of web infrastructure, automation, and cloud platforms, typically backed by a degree in computer science or related experience. Familiarity with tools like Docker, Kubernetes, Jenkins, and cloud services (AWS, Azure, or GCP) is essential, along with knowledge of CI/CD pipelines and scripting languages. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication set top performers apart. These abilities ensure reliable, scalable, and efficient web operations that support seamless user experiences and rapid deployment cycles.

What is the difference between Webops Engineer vs DevOps Engineer?

AspectWebops EngineerDevOps Engineer

Work EnvironmentFocuses on website deployment, performance, and uptimeWorks on software development pipelines, automation, and infrastructure
Industry UsageCommon in web hosting, e-commerce, and online servicesPrevalent in software development, tech companies, and startups

DevOps Engineers focus on automating development processes, integrating software development and IT operations. While both roles involve infrastructure and automation, Webops is more website-centric, whereas DevOps covers broader software development lifecycle automation.

Job description

About Pantheon
Pantheon's WebOps Platform powers the open web, running more than 700,000 websites in the cloud for customers including Google, Princeton, Salesloft, and Doctors Without Borders. Every day, thousands of developers and marketers create, iterate, and scale WordPress and Drupal sites to reach billions of people globally. Pantheon's multi-tenant, container-based platform enables organizations to manage all of their websites from a single dashboard.
The Role
Pantheon is seeking a Staff Product Manager to lead how Pantheon delivers monetization and billing in the product, owning the infrastructure that turns pricing and packaging decisions into what customers actually experience - and using that ownership to move the metrics that matter with a high degree of independence. You'll build and run the billing, metering, and entitlement systems that make Pantheon's plans, tiers, and add-ons real, and use that platform to optimize what customers buy: driving upsell and expansion, and reducing downsell and churn.
You'll operate with minimal oversight, owning how Pantheon delivers and monetizes through the product - including how we enable partner and agency monetization - while partnering closely with Finance, RevOps, and Sales leadership on the underlying pricing and packaging decisions. You'll also mentor other PMs working on adjacent growth and monetization initiatives. The job is measured on outcomes: NRR, expansion, and reduced churn/downsell, and on the strength of the strategy and infrastructure you build to deliver them.
What You'll Do
  • Own net revenue retention (NRR) for the WebOps Platform: drive expansion and upsell, shape how packaging and tiers show up in-product, and reduce downsell and churn
  • Own and report on the metrics that matter: NRR, expansion revenue, and partner-sourced revenue, in partnership with Finance and Analytics
  • Partner cross-functionally on pricing and packaging strategy across self-serve, sales-assisted, and enterprise motions, bringing data and trade-off analysis to those decisions
  • Own the roadmap for Pantheon's billing and metering platform (subscription billing, invoicing, usage-based pricing, entitlements) as the infrastructure that makes those pricing and packaging decisions real
  • Keep billing, CRM, and quote-to-cash systems (Salesforce, HubSpot, and our billing platform) aligned so partner and customer pricing changes flow through cleanly to quotes, invoices, and revenue reporting
  • Reduce revenue leakage through payment, dunning, and collections improvements
  • Own how Pantheon enables partner and agency monetization by building the billing, discounting, and revenue-share mechanics that make it profitable for agencies to partner with us, in partnership with the Partner team, Sales, and Finance on the underlying terms
  • Track competitive and market trends in SaaS pricing, packaging, and billing to spot new monetization opportunities for Pantheon
  • Mentor and unblock other PMs working on adjacent growth and monetization initiatives, and champion pricing and billing best practices across the Product org
  • Build visibility and trust for monetization and billing work across the organization - communicating strategy, outcomes, and trade-offs clearly enough that leaders across Product, Finance, and Go-to-Market can act on them
What You Bring to the Table
Experience
  • 8+ years of Product Management experience, with deep expertise owning pricing, packaging, monetization, or billing at a B2B SaaS company, and a track record of driving strategic monetization initiatives with high independence
  • Experience designing partner, channel, or reseller pricing and incentive models - you know how to structure a deal that works for both sides
  • Direct experience owning or working closely with subscription billing platforms (e.g., Zuora, Chargebee, Stripe Billing, or similar)
  • Familiarity with usage-based pricing and metering/entitlement tools (e.g., Stigg, Metronome, Amberflo, or similar)
  • Working knowledge of CRM and quote-to-cash tooling (Salesforce, HubSpot) and how pricing changes flow through to sales and marketing systems
  • Demonstrated ability to design and interpret pricing experiments, and to use data (SQL, Amplitude, Looker, or similar) to inform monetization decisions
  • Proven ability to move revenue outcomes: NRR, expansion, and reduced churn/downsell
  • Skilled at leading cross-functional alignment across Engineering, Finance, RevOps, and Sales on monetization strategy, and comfortable operating with minimal direction
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills; resourceful, self-motivated, and detail-oriented
Bonus Points For
  • Experience monetizing a partner, agency, or channel ecosystem specifically
  • Background partnering directly with Finance/Revenue Accounting on billing system migrations or ERP integrations
  • Experience with WebOps, hosting, or the WordPress/Drupal ecosystem
What We Offer
We have all the usual perks and benefits, but what we can really offer you is a fantastic work environment powered by an amazing team.
  • Industry-competitive compensation and equity plan
  • Paid Time Off (PTO), Paid Sick Leave (PSL), and 11 Paid Company Holidays
  • Full medical coverage (extended health care, dental, vision)
  • Top-of-line equipment
  • Monthly allowance for wellness, reading, and access to LinkedIn Learning for continued development
  • Remote-first culture, with events and activities - both team-based and company-wide - that inspire, educate, and cultivate

Compensation:
  • US Base Salary: $157,000.00 - $218,300.00
  • Canada Base Salary: CAD $127,800.00 - $159,800.00
