What is a web programmer?

A web programmer is responsible for the development and planning of a website’s execution. Your job duties include focusing on the actual code of the website to meet design specifications. You take a design sheet and write up a software algorithm to determine how best to translate it into code, and can work independently or as part of a team. To thrive as a Web Programmer, you need strong proficiency in programming languages such as HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and often server-side languages like PHP, Python, or Ruby, typically demonstrated through a relevant degree or proven experience. Familiarity with frameworks (e.g., React, Angular), version control systems like Git, and an understanding of databases are essential technical assets. Problem-solving ability, attention to detail, and effective communication make someone stand out in this role. These skills ensure the development of functional, user-friendly, and maintainable web applications that meet client and business needs.

Accommodations Plus International (API) is a technology and services company focused on driving innovation across the travel and transportation industry. We partner with organizations in the airline, cruise, and rail sectors to deliver solutions that improve layover operations, enhance customer experience, and support long-term growth.

Our mission is to make layovers simpler and more efficient for crew members—and we bring that to life through deep industry expertise and a practical, results-driven approach.

Today, API’s platform powers over 18 million crew room nights each year for 100+ airlines and travel operators worldwide. Our Global Reach ensures that airline crews are rested, transported, and connected so global aviation runs on time.

At API, we’re building a culture rooted in succeeding and thriving together. It’s a place where people are encouraged to take ownership, develop their skills, and contribute to work that matters.

If you’re looking to grow your career in a company that values steady progress, real impact, and long-term development, we’d like to meet you!

This is a newly created role reporting to the SVP of Engineering. It combines hands-on technical leadership with strategic oversight—you’ll set direction, elevate engineering standards, and drive delivery.

This is a hybrid role based in our Markham, Ontario office.

Success in this Role
  • Delivery: the team consistently ships on commitments against the product roadmap
  • Modernization: meaningful progress moving the platform off legacy patterns toward a modern, cloud-native architecture
  • Velocity: measurable increase in delivery speed (cycle time, deploy frequency, lead time for change)
  • Usability & UX : measurable improvements in usability, performance, and customer satisfaction across web and mobile experiences
  • Engineering Excellence: best practices instilled across the team, including code review, testing, CI/CD, observability, and on-call discipline
What You’ll Do Essential Functions:

Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

Key responsibilities
  • Leadership & Team Building: Lead and grow a team of 10 to 20 engineers across North America and India, fostering a high performance collaborative culture across time zones.
  • Technical Leadership: Own architecture and system design across the full stack, from responsive web and mobile front ends to complex, distributed systems on AWS. Stay close enough to the code to make sharp technical calls and mentor engineers on craft.
  • Cross-Functional Impact: Partner with product, design, and business leaders to translate strategy into technical roadmap, with a shared focus on usability and customer experience. Drive alignment across teams and influence technical strategy.
  • Delivery & Execution: Own delivery against the product and platform roadmap. Improve engineering velocity through process, tooling and best practice.
  • Engineering Excellence: Raise the bar on code quality, testing, and operational excellence. Build strong observability and incident response practice. Leverage modern AI tools to improve productivity and quality.
What You’ll Bring Minimum Qualifications
  • At least 7 years of software development experience, with 3+ years leading a team. This includes hiring, performance management, and developing senior engineers
  • Deep technical background in Java and Angular (or a comparable modern frontend framework such as React or Vue), with a strong sense for building responsive, usable web and mobile front ends
  • Experience building cross-platform mobile applications with Flutter, delivered across Android and iOS
  • Experience with Oracle, Postgres, or similar relational databases, including schema design, performance tuning, and the hard parts
  • Working experience with NoSQL databases (e.g. DynamoDB, MongoDB, Cassandra) and a clear sense of when to reach for them
  • Production AWS experience across computer, networking, and data services
  • Ability to comprehend and contribute to systems design, including scalability, reliability, trade-offs, and failure modes
  • Demonstrable use of AI tools in the software development lifecycle, such as coding assistants, agentic workflows, code review, and test generation. You should be able to show concretely how you and your teams ship faster and better with AI
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with multi-region AWS deployments and delivering customer-facing SaaS products across web and mobile.
Education
  • BSc/BA in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field.
Position Type and Expected Hours of Work
  • Full-time, permanent position. This is a hybrid role based in our Markham, Ontario office, with a typical expectation of two to three days per week on-site.
