Job description

The Product Manager, Digital Forecasting Systems owns the strategy, development, and ongoing improvement of AccuWeather's digital forecasting platforms, with primary responsibility for the Unified Forecast Database (UFDB) and related forecast products. This role ensures forecasts are accurate, actionable, consistent, and aligned with AccuWeather philosophy across all digital outputs.

This role leads prioritization and delivery of system enhancements that improve forecast accuracy, operational efficiency, automation, and product innovation. It serves as a central point of coordination between forecasting leadership, engineering, design, and external partners to identify quality issues, define requirements, and deliver solutions from concept through launch and post-launch evaluation.

The role also establishes and enforces standards for forecast communication, supports training and process improvement, and ensures forecasting systems and products effectively represent AccuWeather's mission, brand, and commitment to Superior Accuracy™.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead work on our Digital Forecasting Database, UFDB, to ensure forecasts are conveying accurate and actionable forecasts that follow AccuWeather philosophy.
  • Continually prioritize and ensure on-time delivery of an ongoing set of enhancements to the UFDB system bringing benefits of improved accuracy, greater forecast preparation efficiency, process automation and new features.
  • Identify concerns and enhancements to our forecast systems and displays (UFDB, MinuteCast, WinterCast, etc) and work with the appropriate teams to being them to fruition.
    • As a key component of this responsibility, develop and continually monitor process to identify operational weather data related quality concerns within AccuWeather products such that the root cause of such issues are quickly understood and corrected.
  • Ensure the AccuWeather Philosophy is kept up to date through a continuous review process and that training is held for pertinent parts of the organization so all of our communications are properly in line with our standards.
  • Oversee creation and maintenance of products and forecasting systems for the Forecasting Operational team.
  • Work with Forecasting leadership to ensure department runs effectively in producing forecasts and communications that positively represent the company, its mission and standards.
  • Establish, refine and execute a process for new products and changes to ensure philosophy is followed and best practices in weather displays and weather communications are utilized. Engage early in the development process and provide feedback toward these goals.
  • Work with third parties, strategic partners, and cross functional internal teams to further AccuWeather's reach and feature set.
  • Manage the development sprints; prioritize product enhancements, while simultaneously crushing technical debt.
  • Lead a scrum team comprising of engineers and product designers to execute against your plans quickly.
  • Produce and review product requirement documents to the highest of standards.
  • Own the end-to-end success of projects from requirements definition through design, development, launch, and post-launch analysis.
  • Work with subject matter experts for your products, capabilities and services.
  • Develop a strategy and make creative recommendations to expand our product vision across the portfolio.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree with 4-6 years' experience in product management
  • As this is a function works closely with our Forecasting systems and the meteorological teams; a B.S. in Meteorology or Atmospheric Sciences is preferred.
  • Experience working with web and app platforms and frameworks
  • Demonstrated superior knowledge of digitally distributed products and technology
  • Experience writing detailed requirements for products, such as wire frames, criteria, and business cases
  • Ability to interact and communicate with product, design, and development teams of all levels, backgrounds and distributed staffing models
  • Demonstrated ability to be meticulous detailed with high-quality attention to detail and focus on a broad, strategic orientation
  • Comfortable prioritizing pipelines of work based on a strategic evaluation of goals and implications
  • Proven leadership experience, including showing that you can effectively communicate to your team and to upper management
  • Exceptional communication skills
  • Driving collective decisions, while being comfortable making independent decisions and thinking through all product ramifications
  • Highly creative and curious with ability to work within practical boundaries
