What is a web manager?

A web manager is responsible for maintaining, designing, and developing a business website, based on the field or specifications set by a client. Your duties include monitoring, assessing, and reporting on online content performance, ensuring a website functions and software is up-to-date, and handling a range of online marketing projects from search engine optimization to social media practices. You may also develop content and monitor web traffic. Since you oversee staff, communication skills are vital. Qualifications include a bachelor’s degree and at least five years of proven on-the-job experience for this career.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a web manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Web Manager, you need expertise in website management, content strategy, SEO, and analytics, often supported by a degree in web design, computer science, or related fields. Familiarity with content management systems (CMS) like WordPress, Google Analytics, and basic HTML/CSS is typically required. Strong project management, communication, and problem-solving skills set outstanding Web Managers apart. These abilities are crucial for ensuring optimal website performance, user experience, and alignment with business objectives.

What are the main challenges a web manager faces when coordinating with cross-functional teams?

Web Managers often collaborate with marketing, IT, design, and content teams to ensure the website aligns with business goals and user needs. One common challenge is balancing differing priorities and timelines from each department, which requires strong communication and project management skills. Additionally, translating technical requirements for non-technical stakeholders and ensuring consistent branding across all web assets can be demanding. Successful Web Managers are proactive in setting clear expectations, facilitating regular meetings, and fostering an environment of open feedback.

Manages day-to-day activity across these platforms, from concept to execution. Determines and implements optimal social media tech stack, taking into account the need for social listening/insight generation, cross-platform publishing, comment tracking, and measurement needs. Provides day-to-day management of our English and Chinese websites, working as needed with external vendors and a number of internal stakeholders on a daily basis. Collaborates across functional areas - especially with our Marketing group and various Practice groups - to ensure a wide breadth of insights and consideration of other teams' needs and goals. Identifies, evaluates, briefs, and manages individual creative, brand, publisher, and media partners for specific social content initiatives. Uses first, second, and third-party data to surface and prioritize social content needs and grow our audience. Acts as a steward of SOM’s brand and provides a more thoughtful approach to social media marketing. Creates an SOM Engagement plan to leverage your ~1400 colleagues as SOM social media ‘ambassadors’. Assists with other projects and responsibilities as may be required for the position.

Leadership Responsibilities

Inspires and leads others by example, participates in staff mentoring and training, clearly defines team member expectations and responsibilities, empowers others, and delegates where appropriate based on team members’ recognized abilities and potential. Directly supervises staff and is committed to direct reports’ professional development. Develops and engages in talent strategy to find specialists, leaders, and future professionals for the firm through resume review and interviews. In collaboration with team members, develops a clear and consistent work plan to achieve the project budget, deliverables, and schedule. Actively engages in internal and external professional development opportunities. Contributes to the implementation of sustainable strategies in all project assignments and the associated development of staff knowledge. Contributes to the development of standards, policies, and procedures. Protects SOM from financial and legal risk.

Minimum Qualifications

5+ years of demonstrated experience with the development and design of online sites or equivalent knowledge, skills and abilities. Excellent design/photography skills including photo and video editing is a must! A true "whole-brained" thinker and doer with a deep understanding of how content across different social channels and platforms can build and grow a brand. Comfortable oscillating between big-picture strategy and in‑the‑weeds execution. A clear, responsive communicator, verbally and in writing. Incredibly organized and a masterful manager of one’s own and others’ time. Curious about new channels and tactics and how to apply them (or not) to our own social media strategy. Driven by data and intuition with the ability to effectively prioritize work demands to ensure deadlines are met. Passionate about design, architecture, the built environment in general - and constantly curious about new market trends, research findings, and stories and how they might translate into compelling social content. Adaptable to different working styles, mindsets, and personalities, showcasing a willingness to collaborate with all. Excited about proactively coming up with and implementing ideas (big and small) that will help grow our brand and audience. Attentive to detail with high standards of quality while maintaining an (authentically) friendly, positive attitude. Flexible and open‑minded, but also have strong convictions and a POV that you can clearly communicate and defend.
