Job Description Summary

The web manager will be responsible for managing the strategic development, content generation, and implementation of the University of Pennsylvania's School of Veterinary Medicine (Penn Vet) website and subsites to elevate brand visibility and reputation, uphold message discipline, and support institutional growth. This role works on multiple website projects concurrently, with various timelines, and collaborates with academic, research, hospital, and administrative departments throughout the institution to elevate Penn Vet's programmatic objectives, goals, and strategic priorities. The web manager will create, publish, and optimize written and visual/video content; ensure day-to-day website editorial maintenance; and work with internal partners on content development and posting.
The web manager will work closely with Penn Vet Information Technology's (IT) backend developers to support and expand appropriate website presence, and troubleshoot issues as required. The candidate will also work with University partners and external partners on analytics tracking, ADA compliance, video hosting, and other solutions as needed. The position reports to the assistant dean of strategic communications.
The web manager is motivated by ownership and accountability, and takes pride in delivering accurate, high-quality content. This position requires an innate collaborator with strong interpersonal and communication skills who will work with non-technical staff to achieve their project goals. The web manager should demonstrate initiative, be adept at problem-solving, and possess a strong orientation to detail.

Job Description

Job Description Specific Responsibilities:

Content Management

  • Optimize and upload text, images, audio-visual content, captions, and photo credits. Establish a regular procedure for reviewing, updating, maintaining, and archiving content as needed. Ensure content consistency across the website and test changes across all browsers.
  • Lead and manage the website analytics function. Review processes regularly to assess and make recommendations for improvement in line with best practices.
  • Proactively suggest improvements and enhancements to ensure accurate, timely content and promote optimal use of the WordPress Content Management System (CMS).
  • Support stakeholders in determining the optimal WordPress formats to meet project goals.
  • Review and conduct periodic accessibility testing to improve and ensure the website's structure, navigability, and usability. Work with IT to create new website elements and/or maintain the integrity of website elements, as well as to support regular CMS upgrades.
  • Conduct testing and implementation as part of development and upgrade requirements.
  • Organization of backend content modules, lists, categories, and internal tagging. Establish organization logic and perform ongoing audits of module integration as required. Implement consistent metadata to enhance Search Engine Optimization (SEO).

Project Management

  • Manage and execute incoming requests for new and/or updated web content in accordance with the overall communications workflow.
  • Manage and prioritize multiple projects concurrently to provide accurate timeline estimates and meet required project deadlines.
  • Manage contracted web support for software updates/improvements, and for new development projects.
  • Annual and/or semi-annual review of web content byacademic, research, hospital, and administrative sections.

Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree with training/experience in web technology, with proven work experience in a web services environment; understanding of web standards/best practices. A minimum of two to three years of experience with Content Management Systems (CMS), preferably WordPress. Proficiency with Adobe Creative Cloud and browser-based user interfaces.

The ideal candidate will have experience in an academic and/or hospital environment. Capability in developing information architecture and content strategy. Experience with multimedia on a CMS platform, as well as experience with Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) and HTML, and knowledge of cross-platform data sharing and compatibility. Strong understanding of SEO, accessibility, and usability standards, and familiarity with Google Analytics
