Job description

AAD/USSSA is currently hiring for baseball officials for the youth programs in the Abq / Rio Rancho area.ย This is a part-time position on 28-30 weekend dates (Saturday and Sunday most dates / some weeknight opportunities) from February through November.ย ย 


The official is the person charged with officiating the game, including beginning and ending the game, enforcing the rules of the game and the grounds, making judgment calls on plays, and handling the disciplinary actions.ย The job of a baseball umpire requires quick thinking, common sense, and confidence. When the ball is in play, the umpire sees the action, assesses the situation, and makes the call -- all in a matter of seconds. The successful umpire has a thorough knowledge of the rulebook, is even-tempered, and is mentally strong enough to handle situations under stressful conditions. An umpire is expected to hustle, be alert, be in good physical condition, and have a neat appearance.ย Officials must display good judgment along with game management and communication skills. Promptness, appearance and good attendance is critical to maintain contract. Some officiating or playing experience is preferred.


Essential Job Functions:

  • Perform a general inspection to ensure the sports area is safe for use; report any damage or disrepair.
  • Ensure that contests follow sports activities rules, make subjective calls, decide arguments
  • Monitor play. Ensure good sportsmanship is demonstrated always. Inform and enforce sports rules, playtimes
  • Ensure the safety of program participants where and if necessary.ย 
  • Report all incidents/accidents to the supervisor immediately. Complete and submit accident/incident records and forms.
  • Practice safe work habits and contributes to the safety of self, co-workers, and general public.
  • Create a positive experience for participants and families through professional and courteous behavior.
  • Respect diversity in the workplace.


Ability to:

  • Follow written and oral instructions; speak clearly and concisely, in English.
  • Interpret, explain, follow and apply the applicable rules, AAD policies and written instructions.
  • Keep accurate records and report scores accurately.
  • Identify and prevent hazards, implement solutions, maintain safe environments.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with Director, UIC, other officials, program participants and the general public.
