What Is a Web Developer Job Description?

Web Developers generate traffic for their clients' products and services by creating eye-catching and effective websites. They identify potential users and design a website that appeals to these customers. They may meet with existing and potential clients to consider their wants and needs for a website or consider how best to maintain their current website’s functionality. Web Developers typically work on a team; they may collaborate to create the layout of a new website and design new elements such as logos. As a Web Developer, you are always primarily concerned with creating an aesthetically pleasing and user-friendly page.

What does a Web Developer do?

A Web Developer is responsible for designing, coding, and maintaining websites and web applications. They work with programming languages like HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and often backend languages such as PHP, Python, or Ruby. Web Developers ensure that websites are functional, user-friendly, and responsive across different devices. They may also collaborate with designers and content creators to deliver a seamless online experience.

What are some common challenges web developers face when working on cross-functional teams?

Web developers often collaborate with designers, product managers, and backend engineers, which can present challenges in aligning priorities and communication styles. For example, translating design concepts into functional code may require negotiation and compromise, while ensuring that technical constraints are understood by non-technical team members. Regular meetings, clear documentation, and using project management tools can help facilitate smoother collaboration and address these challenges effectively.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Web Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Web Developer, you need strong proficiency in HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and familiarity with frameworks like React or Angular, usually supported by a relevant degree or coding bootcamp. Knowledge of version control systems (e.g., Git), content management systems, and sometimes certifications like AWS Certified Developer are commonly required. Attention to detail, problem-solving, and effective communication are essential soft skills for collaborating with teams and translating client requirements into functional websites. These skills and qualities are vital for delivering responsive, secure, and user-friendly web solutions that meet business needs.

  • Make and clearly communicate decisions around frontend architecture, tooling, frameworks, and integration patterns.
  • Identify, prioritize, and actively reduce technical debt within the Hub codebase.
  • Collaborate closely with backend and platform teams on API design and integration strategies.
  • Provide high-quality code reviews and contribute to shared web standards through the web guild.
  • Help evolve build, deployment, and CI/CD pipelines associated with the Hub product.

Required Qualifications & Experience

  • 5+ years of professional experience building and maintaining modern web applications.
  • Strong experience with React (functional components and hooks).
  • Strong proficiency in TypeScript and modern JavaScript.
  • Experience with Node.js (e.g., Express or similar frameworks).
  • Solid understanding of RESTful APIs and frontend–backend integration.
  • Proven ability to design and own large, long-lived codebases.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

AI-Driven Development  & Engineering Productivity

Cova embraces AI-assisted development as a force multiplier. In this role, you are expected to actively leverage AI coding tools as part of your daily workflow while applying strong engineering judgment.

  • Uses AI tools (e.g., Copilot, Cursor, Claude Code, etc. chat-based agents) to accelerate development and problem-solving.
  • Understands how to prompt, guide, and iteratively refine AI outputs to achieve high-quality results.
  • Exercises sound judgment in validating, refining, and integrating AI-generated code.
  • Applies AI to learning, prototyping, debugging, and refactoring — not as a substitute for fundamentals, but as leverage.
  • Understands that AI tools are evolving rapidly and actively explores ways to move beyond basic code-generation use cases, leveraging automation, agents, and modern development workflows to improve outcomes across the software lifecycle.
  • Demonstrates curiosity and a willingness to explore emerging development practices, including AI-assisted workflows, developer experience (DevX), CI/CD, automation, and DevOps tooling.
  • Comfortable working through ambiguity, experimenting, iterating, and establishing practical best practices where clear patterns or processes do not yet exist.
  • Looks beyond immediate feature delivery to identify opportunities to improve developer productivity, build quality, deployment processes, and overall engineering effectiveness.

Nice-to-Have Experience

  • Micro-frontend architectures (e.g., single-SPA, Webpack Module Federation).
  • Design systems and reusable component libraries.
  • Automated testing strategies for frontend applications.
  • Azure and Azure DevOps pipelines.
  • Experience building software in regulated environments.

What Really Matters at Cova
