The main difference between a Web Developer Manager and a Web Developer is that the manager oversees development teams, manages projects, and handles strategic planning, while the Web Developer focuses on coding and building websites. The manager role requires leadership experience and often involves higher-level responsibilities, whereas the developer role emphasizes technical skills and hands-on development work.

How does a web developer manager typically balance hands-on coding with leadership responsibilities?

As a Web Developer Manager, you are often required to strike a balance between leading your team and participating in technical work. While your primary focus will be on managing projects, mentoring team members, and coordinating with stakeholders, many organizations expect you to stay technically involved—such as guiding architectural decisions or reviewing code. The balance can vary depending on the company's size and structure, but effective Web Developer Managers allocate time for both strategic leadership and hands-on technical tasks to maintain credibility and ensure project success.

What is a web developer manager?

A Web Developer Manager is a professional responsible for leading and managing a team of web developers. They oversee the planning, development, and maintenance of websites or web applications, ensuring projects are completed on time and meet quality standards. In addition to technical expertise, they coordinate project tasks, mentor team members, and serve as a liaison between developers and other stakeholders. Their role often includes setting development standards, implementing best practices, and staying updated with the latest web technologies.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a web developer manager?

To thrive as a Web Developer Manager, you need a strong background in web development, team leadership experience, and often a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with project management tools (like Jira or Trello), web frameworks (such as React or Angular), and version control systems (like Git) is typically required. Exceptional communication, problem-solving, and mentorship abilities help you guide your team and foster collaboration. These skills ensure that development projects are delivered efficiently, meet business goals, and encourage a productive and motivated team environment.

Job description

Takt is a Vancouver-based full-service creative agency helping ambitious brands craft experiences in digital and analog environments.

We're looking for a team member with proven front-end web development skills in WordPress custom theme development to join our team. This is a full-time role, located in our Vancouver (HQ). Additional consideration if you also know Drupal and/or Shopify.

At Takt, you'll collaborate with a diverse team of talented designers and strategists to build world-class brands, websites and campaigns for our partners. The right candidate is comfortable in a fast-paced, interdisciplinary environment, has excellent communication skills, and is passionate about development and design.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Work with the team to produce estimates, establish timeframes, and identify potential roadblocks/risks to successful delivery.
  • Based on project briefs, work with the team to roadmap the development of websites and supporting infrastructure.
  • When executing, strike a balance between functional and aesthetic design. Work efficiently and iteratively to deliver value early and identify/communicate challenges that require input from other team members before they affect timelines/deliverables.
  • Optimize site for speed/usability/accessibility across desktop, tablet and mobile platforms.
  • Work constructively with team members across disciplines through roadblocks and challenges, solving problems and supporting the team while remaining porous to feedback.
  • Test/QA your work as you execute. Seek to understand what 'done' actually means to the team and the client.

Required Experience

  • Experience collaborating with designers to transform high-fidelity mockups into pixel-perfect, responsive web pages.
  • Ability to cleanly plan/architect WordPress sites, balancing client needs and available resources
  • Strong experience with PHP development, including writing clean, efficient, and maintainable code for WordPress themes, plugins, and custom functionality.
  • Experience developing custom blocks for the WordPress block editor (Gutenberg)
  • Proficient in TypeScript, React, and Vue.js, and familiar with their associated frameworks (e.g. Next.js, Nuxt)
  • Experience in planning and executing integrations between websites and other systems (e.g. CRMs, Identity and Access Management services)
  • Experience with integrating and consuming various third-party APIs, including REST and GraphQL.
  • Experience with use of headless CMS platforms (e.g. Contentful, Sanity) is a bonus
  • Strong working knowledge of web accessibility standards and ability to implement experiences that meet these standards and, more importantly, a desire for a greater diversity of people to be able to use them regardless of any specific regulatory requirements.
  • Ability to plan and set up staging and production environments across a variety of infrastructures following best practices
  • Experience/knowledge of security best practices across the SDLC
  • Experience with version control systems and a strong understanding of collaborative development workflows.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with a demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with designers, strategists, and clients
  • A proven ability to be flexible and adaptable in a fast-paced, agile environment

Bonus Points if you have the Following

  • Experience with Drupal
  • Experience with modern JavaScript frameworks (e.g. React/Next.js) , tooling (e.g. Webpack) and CI/CD
  • Experience with headless CMSs
  • Experience with Shopify
  • Basic server / DNS management skills
  • Have a GitHub profile or similar? We'd love to see it!

Compensation

$70K - $90K based on experience.
