Web Accessibility Developer Remote information

What is a web accessibility developer?

Web Accessibility Developers are professionals who specialize in designing and coding websites and applications that are usable by people with disabilities. Their work ensures compliance with accessibility standards like the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG), making digital content perceivable, operable, understandable, and robust for all users. As remote workers, they collaborate with design and development teams to audit, remediate, and implement accessible features, often using tools to test compatibility with assistive technologies. Their efforts help organizations create inclusive digital experiences and meet legal requirements for accessibility.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a web accessibility developer?

To thrive as a Web Accessibility Developer, you need a strong understanding of HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG), often backed by experience in front-end development and accessibility auditing. Familiarity with tools like screen readers (e.g., JAWS, NVDA), accessibility testing frameworks, and ARIA (Accessible Rich Internet Applications) is essential. Attention to detail, problem-solving, and effective remote communication skills help you collaborate with teams and ensure inclusive digital experiences. These competencies ensure that websites are accessible to all users, comply with legal requirements, and provide a better user experience.

What are the most common challenges faced by remote web accessibility developers, and how can they overcome them?

Remote Web Accessibility Developers often face challenges such as staying updated with evolving accessibility standards, effectively communicating technical requirements to cross-functional teams, and ensuring consistent accessibility testing across various devices and platforms. Overcoming these challenges involves proactively participating in accessibility communities, utilizing collaborative tools for documentation and feedback, and regularly attending virtual training sessions. Building strong relationships with designers and developers through clear communication also helps in integrating accessibility best practices throughout the development process.

Job description

We're seeking a self-motivated, detail-oriented web front-end engineer with significant JS/HTML/CSS experience to help maintain and enhance the web-based GUI for the FortiSwitch network switch. Our ideal candidate will be a self-starter, capable of reviewing their own work thoroughly to check for issues and mistakes, and somebody who is proactive in locating and fixing existing bugs as well as proposing new features and ways to streamline the internal design of the system. The candidate will be expected to learn some Python and C coding (if not already proficient) for integration with the rest of the system; candidates with existing Python, C, and/or Cython experience are especially well-qualified in this regard.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Locate, fix, and verify bugs in the FortiSwitchOS web-based GUI code.

  • Brainstorm, propose, and implement new features for the GUI.

  • Investigate bugs that may have associations or origins in other parts of the codebase (which is predominantly C code).

  • Interface with other FortiSwitch team members to gain information or help diagnose and fix bugs that manifest in the GUI.

  • Write and maintain significant amounts of i18n- and a11y- compliant HTML, JS and CSS, with careful attention to TypeScript rules, SCSS syntax, and general coding practices already reflected in the codebase.

  • Compose functional specifications for new features and interface with QA, management, product, and/or other engineers to discuss and refine these specifications.

  • Propose and proactively implement changes to the structure of the GUI codebase in order to improve maintainability and simplify the code structure and size.

  • Assess and improve performance of the GUI system including both middleware/backend portions and frontend aspects and implement streamlined alternatives.

Requirements:

  • At least 5 years of experience in front-end web development

  • Familiarity or fluency with Typescript and SCSS.

  • Fluency in HTML, CSS, and Javascript (ES6).

  • Proficient in the use of AJAX and Promise methodologies.

  • Familiar with front-end component-based frameworks such as Vue or React.

  • Ability to learn new languages and technologies/frameworks quickly.

  • Education in algorithmic complexity (independent of a particular language).

  • Self-motivated with strong problem solving, diagnostic, and documentation skills.

  • Ability to interface seamlessly with remote workers.

Education:

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science or related area.

Must be authorized to work in the U.S. without sponsorship.

The US base salary range for this full-time position is $148,000-$180,000. Fortinet offers employees a variety of benefits, including medical, dental, vision, life and disability insurance, 401(k), 11 paid holidays, vacation time, and sick time, as well as a comprehensive leave program.

Wage ranges are based on various factors, including the labour market, job type, and job level. Exact salary offers will be determined by factors such as the candidate's subject knowledge, skill level, qualifications, experience, and geographic location.
