Job description

School Crossing Guard

A school crossing guard is responsible for helping students safely cross roadways as they travel to and from school. Crossing Guards should be able to interact with children and pedestrians in a friendly manner and be able to react quickly to potential dangers that can affect children. This is a seasonal, part-time position during the school year.

Responsibilities:

  • Direct traffic and pedestrians at designated street crossing locations.
  • Ensure the safe passage of students and other pedestrians to and from school or other destinations.
  • Stay alert at all times to traffic patterns and potential hazards in the area.
  • Assist children in crossing the street safely, by guiding them through traffic with a stop sign, a hand signal, or other means.
  • Report any potential safety hazards to the appropriate authorities.
  • Maintain a professional demeanor and a friendly attitude while performing job duties.
  • Remain attentive to changing weather conditions and take appropriate steps to ensure personal safety and the safety of those crossing the street.
  • Maintain awareness of the possible threats to student safety and work to minimize these threats.
  • Participate in training and development programs as required.

Requirements:

  • No formal education or experience requirements
  • Must be able to speak and understand English
  • Must be able to communicate effectively and give instructions to others
