Job description

Bear Guard

The Bear Guard is responsible for protecting personnel, visitors, equipment, and work areas from potential encounters with bears and other wildlife at the King Cove road construction site. The Bear Guard monitors surrounding areas, identifies potential wildlife hazards, and takes appropriate preventive and deterrent measures to maintain a safe work environment.

This position requires a strong understanding of bear behavior, excellent situational awareness, sound judgment, and the ability to work safely in remote Alaska environments and changing weather conditions. The Bear Guard will work closely with site management and safety personnel to identify wildlife hazards and implement appropriate mitigation measures.

Essential Job Functions

  • Monitor work sites, access routes, camps, and surrounding areas for signs of bear or other wildlife activity.
  • Maintain continuous awareness of wildlife activity and potential hazards within and around the work area.
  • Conduct routine patrols and visual inspections of designated areas.
  • Use approved bear deterrent methods and equipment in accordance with company policies, site procedures, and applicable Alaska regulations.
  • Respond appropriately to bear sightings, encounters, or other wildlife-related incidents.
  • Communicate wildlife activity and potential hazards promptly to supervisors, employees, and site personnel.
  • Assist with establishing and maintaining wildlife-safe work practices and procedures.
  • Identify and report potential wildlife attractants, including improperly stored food, garbage, waste, or other materials.
  • Help ensure food, trash, and other bear attractants are properly secured and managed.
  • Maintain accurate records of wildlife sightings, patrols, incidents, and deterrent activities.
  • Coordinate with site safety personnel regarding wildlife hazards and emergency response procedures.
  • Maintain and inspect assigned wildlife deterrent equipment and immediately report damaged or missing equipment.
  • Follow all company safety policies, site-specific procedures, PPE requirements, and applicable federal, state, and local regulations.
  • Maintain professional conduct when interacting with employees, subcontractors, visitors, and members of the public.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED preferred.
  • Previous experience working in remote Alaska, construction, industrial, environmental, security, or similar field environments preferred.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of bear behavior, wildlife awareness, and bear deterrence practices.
  • Ability to recognize signs of bear activity and identify potential wildlife hazards.
  • Ability to remain calm and make sound decisions during wildlife encounters or other potentially hazardous situations.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with supervisors and site personnel.
  • Ability to work outdoors for extended periods in varying Alaska weather conditions.
  • Ability to walk, stand, patrol, and perform physical activities for extended periods.
  • Must be willing and able to work in remote locations and potentially live in camp accommodations.
  • Must be able to successfully complete all required site-specific safety training.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience as a Bear Guard, Wildlife Guard, Wildlife Technician, Environmental Technician, or similar position.
  • Experience working around brown/grizzly bears and black bears in Alaska.
  • Alaska-specific bear safety or wildlife training.
  • Experience working on remote federal, military, construction, environmental remediation, or industrial sites.
  • Familiarity with Alaska Department of Fish and Game wildlife guidance and applicable wildlife regulations.
  • Current First Aid/CPR certification.
  • Experience operating ATVs, UTVs, boats, or other site-specific transportation equipment, as applicable.

Physical Requirements

The Bear Guard must be able to perform physical duties associated with outdoor and remote-site work, including prolonged periods of standing and walking, traversing uneven terrain, climbing stairs or inclines, and carrying required equipment. The employee must be capable of working in cold, wet, windy, or otherwise challenging weather conditions and must maintain sufficient mobility and awareness to respond quickly to changing wildlife conditions.

Work Environment

This position may be performed at remote locations throughout Alaska and may require extended periods outdoors in areas with active bear and wildlife populations. The position may involve rotational schedules, extended shifts, camp accommodations, and work during weekends, holidays, or irregular hours depending on project requirements.

The Bear Guard must understand that wildlife encounters are an inherent hazard of working in remote Alaska and must consistently follow established wildlife safety and emergency response procedures.

Safety & Compliance

The Bear Guard is expected to maintain a strong safety culture and immediately report unsafe conditions, wildlife activity, incidents, and potential hazards. All wildlife deterrence activities must be conducted in accordance with applicable laws, regulations, company policies, client requirements, and approved site procedures.
