SUMMARY DESCRIPTION
High school interscholastic athletics is an integral part of the total educational program in the Washoe County School District. Interscholastic athletics provides opportunities for students to participate in competitive sports with the emphasis on the development of skills, work ethic, sportsmanship, and teamwork. The Athletic Director provides leadership and direction for the Washoe County School District (WCSD)'s athletic programs at assigned schools. The Athletic Director is responsible for overseeing the district's athletic initiatives, ensuring compliance, and promoting student participation in athletics.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Representation and Advocacy: Serves as a WCSD representative and assumes responsibility at local, state, and national meetings, governmental hearings, and events related to
2. Compliance:
  1. Assists in interpreting national, state, and WCSD athletic rules and
  2. Follows and maintains knowledge of all District policies and
  3. Assists routine Title IX site visits for assigned school(s) and works with school administrators and district personnel to investigate alleged Title IX complaints.
  4. Coordinates and monitors adherence to Title IX guidelines and
  5. Appropriately maintains and secures confidential records and
3. Athletic Program Coordination:
  1. Oversees the coordination and scheduling of high school athletic programs, ensuring alignment with district goals and state regulations. May assist middle school personnel with similar athletic activities.
  2. Directs the development of WCSD's high school athletic schedules and coordinates out-of-district travel for tournaments, meets, and related athletics May assist middle school personnel with similar athletic activities.
  3. Leverages technology (such as NND1, Infinite Campus, Final Forms, NFHS Learn, Impact, MaxPreps, ) to coordinate athletic programs and events with other schools, both in WCSD and other districts.
  4. Supervises the coaches in the cleaning, storage, and maintenance of all athletic equipment and uniforms, including the maintenance of updated inventories.
  5. Supervises coaches and team personnel ordering of athletic equipment and maintenance of a current inventory to ensure financial processes are followed.
  6. Responsible for developing and supervising the athletic budget at the assigned school(s).
4. Athletic Events:
  1. Coordinates support services for athletic events in accordance with WCSD's policies and regulations.
  2. Sets schedules for game workers and helps with payroll for said game.
  3. Coordinates referees/officials, with outside entities if needed, for athletic.
  4. Coordinates transportation for competitions away from their home school(s).
  5. Acts as the game manager, or assigned a game manager when needed at athletic events to ensure appropriate game workers are assigned, liaison with officials and visiting team, and assist with crowd control.
  6. Communicates with Trainer on duty regarding injuries/concussions.
  7. Ensures adherence to medical and safety requirements.
  8. Facilitates game changes and cancellations.
  9. Coordinates visiting team space to change, prepare, and meet if needed.
  10. Arranges security for athletic related events as necessary and assists law enforcement agencies, including the Washoe County School District Police Department (WCSDPD) if needed. Sends school police schedule of events to make sure we have school police at all athletic events.
5. Meetings and Communication:
  1. Conducts regularly scheduled athletic meetings with assistant principals responsible for school athletic programs.
  2. Holds parent meetings regarding athletics, student athletes, chain of command, goes over rules and regulations of being a high school athlete.
  3. Meets with parents regarding complaints, issues with coaches, student behavior.
  4. Attends mandatory athletic meetings with the appropriate commissioner and other Athletic Directors.
  5. Coordinates with Leadership for Homecoming and/or special events.
  6. Attends conferences, such as NADA, if feasible.
  7. Serves as a representative of WCSD for the local officials' associations.
  8. Provides leadership for and serves as liaison to high school athletic booster groups and coordinates, with the coaches, the support group for specific athletic programs.
  9. Maintains appropriate certifications and training hours as required.
  10. Attends in-service trainings.
  11. Attends staff meetings for assigned school(s).
  12. Attends league and district meetings.
6. Staff Management:
  1. Interviews and selects coaching personnel. Assists in the hiring process of all coaching positions and evaluates coaches by providing input to the principal(s).
  2. Supervises and evaluates assigned staff.
  3. Advocates for student athletes, coaches, and athletics at the school level.
  4. Responsible for making sure all coaches have the proper certifications and clearances and have taken all the necessary classes to be a coach-inputs certifications into the applicable system(s).
  5. Maintains necessary records and completes required paperwork in a specified time and manner.
  6. Oversees evaluations of coach performance, duties, and expectations.
  7. Ensuring coaches use the tools given to them (e.g. MaxPreps, Aktivate, )
  8. Supervises and directs the coaching staff to ensure that proper practice schedules are maintained and that NIAA rules are adhered to by all athletic teams.
  9. Provides help to athletic secretary regarding coach's clearances, payroll and hiring of new coaches.
  10. May assist as a back-up coach in emergency situations, if needed.
  11. Identifies and coordinates appropriate professional learning programs for athletics personnel.
  12. Assists the NIAA office in developing programs for coaches, officials, & admins.
  13. Monitors the certified athletic coach and trainer programs in assigned school(s).
  14. Facilitates meetings with coaches and staff.
7. Student Management:
  1. Verifies that rosters are correct before registering them with the NIAA.
  2. Follows up on athletically ineligible
  3. Ensures that all student athletes are eligible, insured, cleared for play, and have paid fees.
  4. Helps to ensure each athlete has taken the impact test.
  5. Ensures coaches have the proper rubric for tryouts to explain roster decisions.
  6. Ensures any coach that is driving students is properly cleared to transport.
  7. Sets up National Letter of Intent ceremonies and awards.
8. Administrative Functions:
  1. Participates with the Purchasing Department in all aspects of purchasing athletic supplies and equipment.
  2. Works with staff from WCSD's Purchasing Department to negotiate contracts with officials' associations for all game officials.
  3. Assists the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association (NIAA) with investigating and ruling on athletic transfer waivers.
  4. Revises and maintains the Activities/Athletics Procedures Manual.
  5. Works with Athletic Administrator on events such as NIAA violations, ensuring sporting events are organized, parent/coach/player concerns.
9. Facilities:
  1. Works with the Facilities Department as a resource person for athletic facilities.
  2. Coordinates acquiring and ensuring proper field permits are in place for non-school properties/locations as needed for assigned school(s) athletics.
  3. Works with Site Facilities lead to ensure games and facilities are set up properly.
  4. Finds/schedules space inside if weather/smoke does not permit outside activitiy.

10. Additional Duties: Performs other duties related to the position, as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Any combination of education and experience that could likely provide the required knowledge and skills is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and skills would be:
Education: Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university. A degree in sports management, education, business administration or a closely related field is preferred.
AND/OR
Experience: Three (3) years of experience in sport program administration or school athletics administration, including responsibility for staff supervision. Licensed teaching or administrative experience in an accredited K-12 school preferred.
Licenses/Certificates:
  • NIAAA credentials, such as Registered Athletic Administrator (RAA), Registered Middle School Athletic Administrator (RMSAA), Certified Athletic Administrator (CAA) and/or Certified Master Athletic Administrator (CMAA) preferred.
  • Nevada Department of Education teaching license preferred.
  • Nevada Department of Education administrator endorsement preferred.
