Job description

Summary:

Join our team for the summer; get paid to learn about career opportunities in the water industry and serve your community! Are you a high school Junior or Senior with an interest in chemistry, geology, hydrology, biology or learning how your community’s water systems work? If so, this this might be the internship for you! This new intern opportunity allows high school students to explore careers in the water industry, while developing valuable industry specific skills and knowledge. Interns will work alongside dedicate city professionals whose job it is the protect the City’s public health and environment every day.

 

This position will specifically assist the Municipal Services and Operations Department staff with water system operations primarily for the drinking water systems, with some support to clean water and stormwater systems as well. The position will support a variety of programs in addition to treatment plant operations, including lead water line replacement, source water protection and water quality lab operations. Responsibilities will be based on the intern’s educational background and may include but not limited to assistance with water treatment and source water protection projects, data review and assistance with field activities; sampling; data processing; technical reports; document archiving; quality assurance checks; water testing for various contaminants; LIMS data entry and management; service line identification; observations and analysis of source water trends; plant maintenance; SCADA; pretreatment and other programs; public outreach; and applied research. The intern will have opportunities for both office and field work.
Hours: 30 hours per week for 10 weeks during the summer months. Work schedule is part-time and flexible with the student’s schedule, within normal business hours, during the school year.

Qualifications: 

Current high school student with an interest in pursuing careers in the water industry. Applicants should be well organized and detail-oriented, as well as be positive, responsible, safety-oriented and know how to effectively communicate with others.  Must be at least 16 years of age. Resume submission is optional, but encouraged. Applicants are required to provide a 200-word minimum on why you are interested in the internship and what makes you the best candidate.
The successful candidate will be required to pass a background check and post offer City physical and drug screen.
