What is a water tester?

A water tester works under the guidelines of EPA standards to test water quality at waste treatment plants and throughout freshwater systems. You do this to promote and protect the public health. As a water tester, your duties are to take samples of water from a plant and test its quality using specialized skills and equipment. Your goal is to test the levels of harmful materials and chemicals in the water supply through biological sampling and chemical testing. Your responsibilities are incredibly important because of the threat to public health that improper testing of chemicals in our water systems can cause.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a water tester, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Water Tester, you need a solid understanding of environmental science, chemistry, and water quality standards, often supported by a relevant degree or certification. Familiarity with laboratory testing equipment, water sampling procedures, and data analysis software is essential. Attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and effective communication help ensure accurate results and clear reporting. These skills are crucial for maintaining public health and environmental safety by ensuring water sources meet regulatory standards.

What are some common challenges faced by water testers in the field, and how can they be managed?

Water Testers often work in diverse environments, from treatment plants to natural water sources, which can present challenges such as difficult terrain, inclement weather, and ensuring sample integrity during transport. Managing these obstacles requires strong attention to detail, adherence to safety protocols, and the ability to adapt to varying site conditions. Regular training on sampling techniques and equipment maintenance, as well as effective communication with laboratory teams, helps ensure accurate results and efficient workflows.

Job description

***Must hold a Utah Level III or higher certification*** About The Sorrel River Ranch Experience
Sorrel River Ranch is a place where guests and staff come together through a shared love of good food, meaningful connection, and the beauty of Moab. Set along the Colorado River and surrounded by towering red-rock cliffs, the ranch is a unique working property where hospitality, nature, agriculture, and adventure come together.
We're looking for a hands-on, highly capable Water Treatment Operator / Maintenance Supervisor who takes pride in keeping the ranch running safely, efficiently, and beautifully behind the scenes.
This is a role for someone who enjoys being responsible for the big picture and isn't afraid to roll up their sleeves. From producing safe drinking water and overseeing septic and irrigation systems to supporting HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and general property maintenance, you'll play a critical role in the health and operation of the ranch.POSITION OVERVIEW
The Water Treatment Operator / Maintenance Supervisor plans, coordinates, and oversees the ranch's water and maintenance operations.
This position is responsible for potable water operations, septic and irrigation systems, regulatory compliance, preventative maintenance, staff leadership, and general maintenance oversight for the resort and working ranch.
The right person will be organized, resourceful, safety-minded, and comfortable working independently in a remote environment while leading a team and collaborating with other departments.POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Maintain and operate the ranch's potable water systems in accordance with all Utah requirements.
  • Maintain a Utah Level III Water Distribution certification or higher.
  • Ensure all required water testing, records, reports, and regulatory documentation are completed accurately and on time.
  • Oversee septic, irrigation, water distribution, backflow, telemetry, and related systems.
  • Plan, coordinate, and prioritize daily maintenance and water operations.
  • Develop and maintain preventative maintenance programs for the property.
  • Oversee maintenance needs involving plumbing, HVAC, electrical systems, equipment, and general repairs.
  • Lead, train, motivate, schedule, and evaluate maintenance personnel.
  • Establish clear expectations for safety, quality, organization, and performance.
  • Identify operational problems and develop practical, cost-effective solutions.
  • Develop work plans, operating procedures, and maintenance standards.
  • Monitor projects from planning through completion and ensure work is completed properly and on schedule.
  • Assist with budgeting, forecasting, purchasing, inventory, equipment, materials, and labor costs.
  • Monitor expenditures and identify opportunities to improve efficiency and reduce unnecessary costs.
  • Research and prepare reports, contracts, plans, specifications, and operational documentation as needed.
  • Ensure operations comply with applicable health, safety, environmental, and regulatory requirements.
  • Work closely with the General Manager and other department leaders to keep the ranch operating safely and efficiently.
  • Maintain accurate records and organized documentation using Google Workspace and other company systems.
  • Operate power tools, maintenance equipment, vehicles, and other equipment safely.
  • Respond to maintenance emergencies and operational issues as needed.
  • Perform other duties and projects as assigned.
WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR
We're looking for someone who understands that at Sorrel, water, maintenance, hospitality, and ranch life are all connected.
The ideal candidate is:
  • Experienced and confident managing water utility operations.
  • A Utah Level III Water Distribution Operator or higher.
  • A strong maintenance leader with broad hands-on knowledge.
  • Comfortable working with HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and general repair systems.
  • Highly organized and exceptionally attentive to detail.
  • A practical problem solver who can figure things out when conditions aren't perfect.
  • Comfortable leading a team while also jumping in and getting the work done.
  • Safety-conscious and committed to regulatory compliance.
  • Comfortable working independently in a beautiful but remote environment.
  • A clear and confident communicator.
  • Comfortable using computers, Google Workspace, and modern maintenance/administrative systems.
  • Someone who takes ownership rather than waiting to be told what needs to happen next.
EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE / OTHER REQUIREMENTS
  • Utah Level III Water Distribution certification required.
  • Five years of supervisory experience in the administration or operation of a water utility preferred.
  • Experience with water distribution, production, recharge systems, backflow, electrical systems, telemetry, and/or conservation operations.
  • At least five years of maintenance supervisory experience in a comparable property or facility.
  • Strong knowledge of HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and general building maintenance.
  • Experience managing equipment, labor, materials, and maintenance-related costs.
  • Strong understanding of modern leadership, team development, coaching, and employee performance.
  • Ability to use handheld and large-scale power tools safely.
  • Proficiency with computers and Google Workspace.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to operate a motor vehicle safely.
  • Ability to interpret and apply federal, state, and local regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to prepare clear and accurate reports, records, correspondence, and operational documentation.
PHYSICAL & ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS
This is an active, hands-on position at a working ranch.
You must be able to:
  • Lift 50+ pounds.
  • Walk and remain active throughout the workday.
  • Bend, stoop, kneel, climb, and reach with hands and arms.
  • Work around equipment and moderate levels of noise.
  • Work outdoors year-round in extreme heat, cold, rain, wind, and changing weather conditions.
  • Move comfortably throughout the ranch, including uneven terrain and operational areas.
WHY SORREL?
This isn't a typical maintenance job.
You'll be helping care for a one-of-a-kind property where a luxury resort, working ranch, river, gardens, animals, agriculture, and unforgettable guest experiences all exist in the same place.
Your work directly supports the people who live here, the guests who come to experience Moab, and the team that makes Sorrel special.
If you're the kind of person who sees a problem and thinks "I can figure that out," takes pride in doing things right, and wants to live and work somewhere truly extraordinary, we'd love to hear from you.
Limited rental housing may be available on a first-come, first-served basis. Compensation will be based on experience and qualifications.
We thank all applicants; however, only those selected for an interview will be contacted. Applicants must already have legal authorization to work in the United States.
Sorrel River Ranch Resort & Spa is an Equal Opportunity Employer committed to a diverse and inclusive workplace.
