What is a water taxi captain?

A Water Taxi Captain is responsible for operating a water taxi to safely transport passengers across waterways. They navigate routes, follow maritime regulations, and ensure passenger safety at all times. Captains also maintain the vessel, communicate with harbor authorities, and provide customer service. Strong boating skills, a captain’s license, and knowledge of local waterways are essential for this role.

What does a water taxi captain do?

A typical day as a Water Taxi Captain involves preparing the vessel for departure, navigating predetermined routes, and ensuring the safety and comfort of passengers throughout each trip. You will conduct regular safety checks, communicate with dispatch or marina staff, and respond to changing weather or water conditions. Interaction with passengers is a key part of the role, as you'll provide information about destinations, answer questions, and assist with boarding or disembarking. The work environment is dynamic, often requiring schedule flexibility to accommodate peak boating times or special events. This role allows you to work independently on the water while collaborating closely with dockside crews and other maritime professionals.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be a water taxi captain?

To thrive as a Water Taxi Captain, you need strong navigation, vessel operation, and safety management skills, often supported by a valid captain’s license (such as a USCG Master or OUPV license) and relevant maritime experience. Familiarity with GPS navigation, marine radio systems, and emergency protocols is crucial for safe and efficient operations. Outstanding customer service, problem-solving abilities, and clear verbal communication set top candidates apart. These skills ensure the safe transport of passengers, compliance with regulations, and a positive overall experience on the water.

Job description

Full-Time & Part-Time USCG Licensed Captain / Marine Operations Team Member

Boats and Fun – North Captiva Island, Florida

Love being on the water? Want more than just another captain job?

Boats and Fun is looking for an energetic, customer-focused USCG Licensed Captain to join our growing team. We currently have both Full-Time and Part-Time positions available, with year-round opportunities for the right candidate.

We are a family-owned business that has been serving Southwest Florida for nearly 20 years and has built one of the area’s strongest reputations for customer service. Every day is different—you might captain a private dolphin tour in the morning, help guests prepare for a boat rental, assist customers in our island store, or transport families to paradise aboard one of our water taxis.

If you’re looking for a position where you can stay busy, enjoy working with people, and be part of an amazing team, we’d love to hear from you.

Applicants without a valid USCG Captain’s License will not be considered.

Captain Duties

  • Operate Water Taxi service throughout Pine Island Sound
  • Captain private sightseeing and dolphin tours

  • Helping with boat returns

Don’t worry—we’ll train you on our systems and boating course.

  • Stock merchandise
  • Help keep the marina, boats, docks and store clean and organized
  • Load supplies and equipment
  • Support coworkers during busy days

We’re looking for someone who enjoys staying active and taking initiative—not someone who only wants to drive a boat.

Our ideal teammate is someone who is:

  • Friendly and outgoing
  • Dependable and punctual
  • Professional with customers
  • A safe and confident boat operator
  • Self-motivated
