What does a Water Efficiency Specialist do?

A Water Efficiency Specialist works to reduce water usage and promote sustainable water management practices. They assess water systems, identify areas where water can be conserved, and recommend solutions such as efficient fixtures, leak detection, and improved irrigation techniques. These professionals may work with households, businesses, or municipalities, and often provide education on water-saving strategies. Their goal is to help organizations and communities use water more responsibly, saving both resources and costs.

What is the difference between Water Efficiency vs Water Conservation Specialist?

AspectWater EfficiencyWater Conservation Specialist
CertificationsLEED, EPA WaterSense, relevant technical certificationsSame certifications often required
Work EnvironmentDesigning systems, analyzing water use, implementing efficiency measuresPromoting water-saving practices, community outreach, policy advocacy
Industry UsageInvolved in engineering, design, and technical implementationFocuses on behavioral change and policy enforcement

Both roles aim to reduce water use but differ in approach: Water Efficiency professionals focus on technical solutions and system optimization, while Water Conservation Specialists emphasize behavioral change and policy promotion. Understanding these differences helps organizations select the right expertise for their water management goals.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Water Efficiency Specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Water Efficiency Specialist, you need expertise in water management, environmental science, and data analysis, often supported by a relevant degree such as environmental engineering or hydrology. Familiarity with water auditing tools, GIS software, and certifications like Certified Water Efficiency Professional (CWEP) is highly valuable. Strong communication, problem-solving, and project management skills help you effectively collaborate with stakeholders and implement conservation strategies. These skills and qualifications are crucial for designing sustainable solutions that reduce water waste and support environmental and regulatory goals.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in water efficiency roles, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in water efficiency roles often encounter challenges such as stakeholder resistance to change, limited budgets for implementing new technologies, and the complexity of tracking and analyzing water usage data. Overcoming these challenges typically involves effective communication to demonstrate the long-term cost savings and environmental benefits of water efficiency measures, seeking out grants or rebates to offset costs, and utilizing advanced metering and data analysis tools to provide actionable insights. Building strong relationships with facility managers, engineers, and local authorities can also help ensure successful adoption of water-saving initiatives.

Subregional Energy Efficiency Manager (Remote)
Your Role
The Subregional Energy Efficiency Manager (SEEM) plays a critical role in optimizing energy and water efficiency across Digital Realty data center operations within the subregion. Acting as the operational link between corporate sustainability strategy and site-level execution, this role drives measurable improvements in energy performance, supports cost-efficient energy planning, and ensures regulatory compliance while partnering closely with operations, engineering, finance, and customer-facing teams.
What you'll do
  • Oversee and manage all aspects of subregional energy and water utility usage across data center operations.
  • Lead the implementation of energy and water efficiency strategies, including initiatives to improve PUE and WUE.
  • Track, forecast, and analyze energy usage, capacity, efficiency metrics, and costs from a post-sales perspective, including scenario and sensitivity analyses.
  • Monitor energy consumption data and implement global initiatives to reduce energy use and improve efficiency.
  • Ensure accurate collection, validation, approval, and reporting of energy, capacity, metering, and PUE data in line with global standards.
  • Partner with Site Operations, Engineering, DE&C, Solution Engineering, Finance, and Customer Success to support energy planning, billing, and customer usage insights.
  • Serve as the primary operational point of contact for energy and infrastructure metering, including monitoring customer overconsumption and escalation where required.
  • Provide regular and on-demand energy reporting, including monthly and annual summaries, and approve all energy and PUE reports.
  • Support compliance with subregional and local energy regulations, ISO 50001 requirements, audits, and internal energy reviews.
  • Lead energy efficiency projects through completion, manage external consultants where applicable, and stay current on industry best practices and emerging technologies.

What you'll need
  • 7+ years of experience in mission-critical mechanical and electrical environments, preferably within data centres, IT, or telecoms.
  • Bachelor's degree in a technical or engineering discipline, with several years' experience in energy management, sustainability, or environmental engineering.
  • Strong knowledge of data centre infrastructure, including UPS systems, generators, cooling systems, and energy metering concepts.
  • Experience with energy monitoring, management, and reporting platforms, and the ability to interpret energy data accurately.
  • Proven analytical skills with the ability to translate complex data into actionable operational and financial insights.
  • Ability to read and work with electrical and mechanical diagrams.
  • Demonstrated project management skills, including leading cross-functional initiatives and managing change.
  • Strong communication skills, including the ability to present technical and analytical information to diverse audiences.
  • Leadership and people-management capabilities, including coaching, development, and team collaboration (where applicable).
  • A proactive, detail-oriented, and results-driven mindset with strong decision-making and stakeholder-management skills.
