Job description

Job Summary

Under the general supervision of the Water and Wastewater Superintendent the Water Distribution Operator is responsible for the operations, maintenance, construction, and repair of the City's water distribution system. Employee is responsible for operating backhoe and excavator in the installation and repair of water lines.

Essential Job Functions

  • Maintain regular and prompt attendance; physically present to work.
  • Performs after hours work as required (nights and weekends)
  • Assist with emergency response as needed by city hall and local EOC.
  • Repair water and sewer leaks as necessary.
  • Operates specialized equipment to make repairs in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Installs new service lines for residential and commercial properties.
  • Maintains the condition of the water distribution and pumping system including fire hydrants.
  • Perform minor repairs and adjustments to equipment.
  • Flushes fire hydrants as necessary
  • Performs other similar or related duties as assigned.
  • Observes all safety regulations and communicates unsafe conditions or accidents/injuries to supervisor; immediately.

Minimum Qualifications & Requirements

  • Must have High School diploma, or equivalent (GED)
  • One (1) to three (3) years of related work experience to perform such job.
  • Applicant must pass pre-employment criminal background check and drug screen at City's expense.
  • Applicant must have current valid Class "C" Driver's License and be insurable.
  • Must have high school diploma; or equivalent.
  • Must successfully complete Emergency Management and Incident Command Training within first three months of hire date.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish Preferred.

Knowledge, Abilities and Skill

  • Knowledge of safe and effective operation of equipment and machinery.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards involved and the necessary safety precautions.
  • Ability to follow instructions with a minimum supervision.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with other City employees and the public.

Working Conditions/Physical Demands

  • This is safety sensitive position subject to random drug and alcohol testing.
  • Regularly exposed to extreme heat, hot, humid, and cold weather conditions
  • Work involves frequent and recurring assignments requiring strenuous effort.
  • Lifting, moving and carrying up to 50 lbs., may be involved.
