Waste Management Coordinator 1 ($72,800 - $115,400)

Waste Management Coordinator 2 ($87,800 - $143,000)
In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level candidates will take on greater leadership and strategic responsibilities, ensuring the laboratory's waste management program operates at peak efficiency and compliance. In addition to overseeing the proper storage, handling, characterization, packaging, and transportation of hazardous, radioactive, and mixed waste, you will assist efforts to improve waste management processes, develop best practices, and provide technical guidance to teams across the organization.
Additionally, this role may involve supporting projects related to waste minimization, sustainability initiatives, and process improvements to align with the laboratory's mission of scientific excellence and environmental responsibility. Strong leadership skills will be essential, as this individual will mentor staff, collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, and drive innovation in waste management strategies.

- Basic knowledge and experience in managing satellite accumulation areas (SAAs), central accumulation areas (CAAs), PCB storage areas, universal waste (UW) areas, and radioactive staging/storage areas including knowledge of chemical storage, segregation, and handling
- Basic work experience with a laboratory or R&D plant/facility that generated multiple waste types

Education/Experience at higher level: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution and 5 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
This position may be subject to DOE Order 5480.20A, Personnel Selection, Training, and Qualification Requirements for DOE Nuclear Facilities. This DOE Order establishes entry-level requirements to ensure employees in the positions can successfully perform the requirements of the job.
Desired Qualifications:
- Active or transferable Q clearance and HRP
- Successful experience in coordinating cradle to grave management and disposition of non-hazardous, hazardous, chemical, and radioactive waste
- Knowledge of LANL's organizational structure, technical areas, and facilities
- Experience and knowledge of LANL's waste management policies, practices, and procedures
- Current or previous qualification as a waste professional in a Department of Energy facility
- Chemical lab packing experience
- General physical mobility includes but is not limited to: sitting, standing walking, climbing stairs, bending, stooping, crouching, kneeling, twisting the trunk or back, balancing
- Specific physical mobility includes but is not limited to: applying torque with hands or arms, gripping with the hands, pressing/pulling/pushing with the arms, reaching overhead/horizontally/downward, typing or keyboarding, use of both hands, use of both arms, use of both legs, use of both feet
- Weight handling requirements include but are not limited to: carrying 30+ pounds, lifting 30+ pounds
Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.
*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.
