What is a warehouse job?

Warehouse jobs involve tasks related to the storage, organization, and distribution of goods within a warehouse facility. Common responsibilities include receiving and processing incoming stock, picking and filling orders, packing and shipping items, and maintaining inventory records. These roles often require physical activity such as lifting, operating machinery, and working on your feet for extended periods. Warehouse positions can range from entry-level roles like warehouse associates to specialized jobs such as forklift operators or inventory managers.

What are different warehouse jobs?

Warehouse jobs include positions in inventory, logistics, distribution planning, and transportation. Inventory specialists, for example, assess warehouse supplies and source more goods or products when needed. Logistics, inventory, and business specialists may evaluate activities to increase profit and efficiency, while the responsibilities of management primarily involve overseeing operations. Employees in a warehouse operations center may process orders, plan shipping and logistics, and ensure that daily activities run smoothly. Warehouse workers, or laborers, might carry stock from trucks to storage areas. Large warehouses often employ shift workers who operate at different times of the day.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a warehouse worker, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Warehouse Worker, you need physical stamina, attention to detail, basic math skills, and a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with warehouse management systems (WMS), inventory scanners, and forklift certification are commonly required. Strong organizational skills, teamwork, and reliability help individuals excel in this role. These skills and qualifications are essential for maintaining efficient operations, ensuring safety, and achieving accurate order fulfillment.

What are some common challenges faced by warehouse workers, and how can they be managed effectively?

Warehouse workers often encounter challenges such as managing time efficiently during busy periods, maintaining accuracy when picking and packing orders, and adhering to strict safety protocols. To manage these challenges, many warehouses provide thorough training, use technology like inventory management systems, and encourage teamwork to distribute workloads evenly. Open communication with supervisors and regular safety briefings also help create a supportive environment and minimize errors or accidents.

Job description

Position: Warehouse Manager

Position Summary:

We are seeking an experienced Warehouse Manager to take full ownership of warehouse operations supporting a high-volume, three-shift contract aerosol filling manufacturing environment.

This role is accountable for the safe, accurate, and efficient flow of raw materials, components, chemicals, packaging materials, across the operation – from Receiving and put-away through production staging, line delivery, inventory control, yard operations, and finished goods movement.

The Warehouse Manager will lead the warehouse as an integrated operation across all three shifts, develop off shift Warehouse leads, deploy labor based on daily priorities, and ensure material issues are identified and resolved before they impact production.

Our operation maintains a lean inventory model of 8+ turns, making inventory accuracy, material availability, lot traceability, and disciplined warehouse execution critical to production performance.

The Warehouse Manager will also have a key leadership role in the implementation and ongoing execution of our barcode/WMS processes, ensuring inventory transactions, manufacturer lot numbers, locations, and material movements are accurate and traceable.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Own day-to-day warehouse performance across all three shifts.
  • Lead receiving, put-away, picking/staging, production material delivery, inventory control, yard operations, while coordinating internal material movement and yard priorities with the Shipping Supervisor to support both production requirements and outbound shipping.
  • Ensure production materials are accurately staged and available before scheduled production.
  • Own inventory accuracy and ensure physical inventory, system inventory, lot information, and warehouse locations remain aligned.
  • Own warehouse inventory accuracy and inventory-control execution, including annual physical inventory, cycle-count performance, client owned inventory, required month-end client counts, variance reconciliation, and corrective action.
  • Ensure accurate receiving and traceability, including manufacturer lot numbers, quantities, labeling, and required documentation.
  • Lead warehouse adoption and execution of barcode/WMS processes and transaction discipline.
  • Manage warehouse staffing, daily labor deployment, vacation/call-off coverage, overtime, and cross-training.
  • Develop and manage 2nd and 3rd shift Warehouse leads.
  • Coach, develop, and hold employees accountable for safety, accuracy, productivity, attendance, and teamwork.
  • Own warehouse safety, organization, 5s, and continuous improvement.
  • Monitor warehouse KPIs and drive improvements in receiving-to-put-away time, inventory accuracy, production material readiness, labor utilization, and material flow.
  • Identify and recommend improvements related to staffing, equipment, space utilization, and warehouse processes.

Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of progressive warehouse, manufacturing-materials, or distribution experience.
  • Previous warehouse or manufacturing leadership experience.
  • Strong inventory control and material-flow experience.
  • Experience with ERP, WMS, and/or bar code inventory systems.
  • Strong people leadership, problem solving, and organizational skills.
  • Experience supporting a fast-paced manufacturing operation.
  • Multi-shift manufacturing experience preferred.
  • Experience with lot-controlled inventory is strongly preferred.
  • SAP Business One or similar ERP experience is a plus.
  • Experience in aerosol, chemical, CPG, food, pharmaceutical, personal care, or toher traceability-driven manufacturing environments is a plus.

What Success Looks like:

The successful Warehouse Manager will build an operation where inventory is accurate and traceable, materials are received and put away promptly, production requirements are staged ahead, lines remain continuously supplied, off shifts have effective leadership, and warehouse issues are identified and resolved before they disrupt production.

This is a hands-on leadership position, but not a primary forklift driver role. We are looking for a leader who is visible on the floor, understands material flow, develops people, uses data to improve performance, and takes ownership of the warehouse operation.

Schedule:

Primarily first shift with flexibility to effectively support a three-shift manufacturing operation.

Pay/Benefits: This is an exempt position with pay based on experience, plus bonus eligibility. Benefits include: PTO, Holiday pay, health, dental, vision, short and long-term disability, life, critical illness, accident, hospital indemnity, 401(k) with matching.
