Job description

The Estimator is responsible for preparing competitive fixed price quotes (labor and material) for maritime ship repair/ refit and industrial repair/ refit. Determine work procedures, crew size, machines/ tools sub-contractors, and materials required to accomplish work at competitive price and acceptable margins. Conduct ship checks/ in order to properly evaluate the scope of work and obtain accurate bill of material (BOM) quotes in a timely manner. This position reports directly to the General Manager.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
This position is responsible for the following: Other duties may be assigned.
  • Prepare cost estimates for product manufacturing, projects or services to aid management in bidding on or determining price of product or service.
  • Prepare competitive fixed price quotations (both labor and material), for maritime ship repair / refit and industrial repair / refit.
  • Determine work procedures, crew size, machines/tooling, sub-contractors, material, accessories required to accomplish work at competitive price and acceptable margins.
  • Coordinate with Walashek staff and trades as needed in order to gather information and process requirements for accomplishment of work.
  • Conduct ship-checks / site-checks as required in order to properly scope work.
  • Obtain accurate bill of material (BOM) quotations in a timely manner.
  • Maintain relationships with industry suppliers, vendors and clients.
  • Maintain and update contract pipeline in coordination with General Manager, Program Managers and Chief Estimator.
  • Build estimates and quotes using approved corporate policies.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, sketches, drawings and technical manuals in order to machine parts and products according to specifications.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • High performance and a strong team player.
  • Ability to work under deadlines and schedule pressures with minimal supervision.

  • Ability to operate all Microsoft Office applications, to include Microsoft Project
  • Ability to gain access to government and site office access required to obtain drawings, tech manuals, and other technical and planning documentation required for estimating and bidding purposes.

Required Education & Experience:
  • Must be able to pass a drug screen
  • Must be able to obtain access to base as required (DBIDS/TWIC credentials)
  • High School Diploma and/or some college or technical training preferred.
  • 5-10 years-experience in estimating and planning
  • Trade background with welding, boiler making, pipefitting, and /or mechanical work

Working Conditions:
  • Open-air conditions such as noisy, hot, cold, as well as in an office controlled environment.
  • May have to visit projects aboard ships, rigs both on and offshore as well as confined spaces. Must wear hearing, eye, head protection and proper PPE when required.
  • Visits may require standing on a variety of surfaces and at differing angles, bending over, crouching and climbing up and over obstructions such as scaffolding, ladders, and internal barge and boat structural members.
