Job description
Calvert Research and Management (CRM) is seeking a self-motivated and critical thinker to support and execute the firm's shareholder engagement, corporate advocacy and proxy voting activities. This position supports Calvert's mission of responsible investing by contributing to engagement programs and proxy voting processes that seek to promote sound environmental, social and governance practices through active ownership and dialogue with portfolio companies to strengthen governance and improve investor returns in accordance with the Calvert Principles.
The role is designed for a professional who can conduct research, prepare analysis, support company dialogue, contribute to voting decisions and help translate engagement and proxy voting activity into clear materials for investment teams, clients, boards and other stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities
- Engagement research and execution: Analyze environmental, social and governance trends, conduct company and industry research, prepare engagement agendas and supporting materials, and participate in or lead company meetings in support of defined engagement objectives representing Calvert or as part of a collaborative engagement alongside institutional investors, industry organizations and coalitions.
- Engagement program support: Support annual engagement target selection, monitor company progress following engagement, maintain engagement records and contacts, and help ensure engagement activity is documented in accordance with team procedures.
- Stewardship engagement: Lead and participate in proxy-related stewardship engagement calls on specific voting items, including board composition, executive compensation and shareholder proposals, and coordinate with investment teams to ensure alignment on activities.
- Proxy voting policy review: Analyze proxy voting policies and recommend revisions to the Engagement and Proxy Committee to support consistent application of Calvert's voting guidelines and stewardship objectives.
- Proxy voting analysis: Analyze select proxy ballot items to help determine voting decisions consistent with Calvert's proxy voting policies and procedures.
- Proxy voting controls: Perform due diligence and quality checks on ballot items, monitor vote cut-offs and support timely voting across accounts.
- Stakeholder collaboration: Work with Calvert investment professionals, ESG research analysts, legal, compliance, operations, sales, marketing, RFP and other internal partners to support engagement, proxy voting, reporting and client-related deliverables.
- Reporting and communications: Develop presentations, case studies, stewardship reports, board materials, thought leadership pieces and other content that communicates engagement and proxy voting trends, activity and outcomes to internal and external audiences.
- Market and process intelligence: Monitor stewardship, corporate governance, regulatory and market developments and contribute to process improvements, data quality and workflow efficiency across the engagement and proxy voting program.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree required. Advanced degree, CFA progress or other relevant credential in finance, business, law, sustainability, public policy or a related field preferred.
- Typically 3-6 years of relevant experience in investment management, ESG research, corporate governance, shareholder engagement, proxy voting, sustainability, investment research, public policy, consulting or a related field.
- Strong understanding of responsible investment, stewardship practices, corporate governance and proxy voting; familiarity with asset management or institutional investor practices preferred.
- Excellent research and analytical skills, with the ability to synthesize complex information from corporate disclosures, proxy statements, sustainability reports, regulatory materials, investment research and third-party datasets.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to develop clear, concise and persuasive materials for internal and external audiences.
- High attention to detail and sound judgment, including comfort working with sensitive information, procedures, controls and deadlines.
- Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, prioritize effectively and follow through on deliverables in a fast-paced environment.
- Collaborative working style and strong relationship-building skills, with the ability to work across investment, research, stewardship, legal, compliance, operations and client-facing teams.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel and PowerPoint, and Tableau is required. Experience with data tools, automation, Power BI, Power Query, Python or AI-enabled workflows is necessary.
Reporting Line
