Specific Role:
The Voortman SAW Operator is responsible for safely and efficiently operating EMIT's automated Voortman saw line to support structural material flow through Primary Processing. This role ensures beams, channels, and structural components are cut with precision, accuracy, and consistency to meet production schedules and downstream manufacturing requirements. The operator is accountable for equipment performance, quality, safety, and maintaining uninterrupted material flow to subsequent production processes.
Key Accountabilities:
Precision & Throughput Execution
  • Execute all saw-cutting operations to meet daily and weekly production schedules.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, cut lists, work orders, and production documentation accurately.
  • Verify first-piece dimensions using measuring devices before processing production quantities.
  • Monitor production metrics including throughput, feet cut, part accuracy, rework, scrap, and downtime.
  • Ensure materials are processed in the correct sequence to support downstream operations.
  • Maintain high levels of accuracy while maximizing machine utilization.
Equipment Ownership & Preventive Maintenance
  • Perform pre-shift and post-shift inspections of the saw, conveyors, clamping systems, and associated equipment.
  • Monitor blade condition, coolant levels, lubrication systems, and chip removal equipment.
  • Identify and report mechanical or operational issues before they impact production.
  • Work closely with Maintenance and Programming to resolve equipment alarms, calibration issues, or cutting quality concerns.
  • Participate in Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) initiatives and support equipment reliability efforts.
  • Maintain equipment cleanliness and operational readiness throughout each shift.
Safety, Quality & Workplace Organization
  • Follow all company safety policies, lockout/tagout procedures, and machine guarding requirements.
  • Maintain the saw area in accordance with EMIT's 6S standards.
  • Inspect finished material for dimensional accuracy and visual quality before releasing it to the next operation.
  • Report quality concerns immediately and work with Quality Control to resolve nonconforming material.
  • Ensure all material is properly identified, staged, and protected throughout the production process.
Cross-Functional Communication & Material Flow
  • Communicate completed work, delays, shortages, and production concerns to Leads and Supervisors.
  • Coordinate material flow between the saw, drilling, plasma, welding, and downstream operations.
  • Participate in daily production meetings and provide updates on production status.
  • Assist with maintaining production schedules by proactively identifying bottlenecks or workflow disruptions.
Continuous Improvement & Team Development
  • Identify opportunities to reduce setup time, improve productivity, and increase machine efficiency.
  • Support Lean Manufacturing and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Cross-train on adjacent equipment to improve operational flexibility.
  • Assist in training new operators and sharing best practices.
  • Demonstrate a positive attitude toward learning new equipment, processes, and technologies.
Qualifications:
