What you will do

The internship role provides students with the opportunity to apply academic knowledge and skills in a manufacturing environment, and to support/promote the graduate's career goals through interaction with engineering professionals. Interns participate in professional activities for Volvo New River Valley Plant by working on practical, innovative and important projects. This Internship provides structured learning experiences where interns and our Engineering professionals work together on projects within their selected organization. The internship allows students to integrate knowledge and skills in a manner that is mutually beneficial to the student and Volvo New River Valley Plant.
The purpose of this position is to provide engineering support to the Maintenance Engineering and Operations department and to provide learning opportunities for Mechanical or Electrical Engineering students, or Engineering Technology students.
Learning opportunities:

In the position you will:

  • Review equipment preventative maintenance checks for effectiveness and look for ways to improve the PMs and to improve equipment reliability.
  • Review equipment documentation and help with creating and maintaining the equipment library.
  • Review recommended spare parts and help determine stocking requirements, and work with our Computerized Maintenance Management System to validate parts.
  • Help analyze the criticality of spare parts for equipment, create spare parts ledgers for production equipment and apply Failure Effect Mode Analysis methods.
  • Give the student opportunities to learn and apply lean manufacturing principles within the maintenance organization.
  • Assist with and create professional and autonomous maintenance calendars.
  • Help in creating One Point Lessons as required.
  • Create PowerPoint presentations for communication of new project ideas and reports.

What you will bring: 

  • Intermediate Excel skills for Data analysis and creating graphs.
  • IT Skills
  • Must have experience in EXCEL, MS Word, AutoCAD or similar type of drafting program.

Education Requirements:

  • Must beenrolled and pursuing a degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Electrical Engineering/ Electrical Engineering Technology/ EET/ Electronics Technology, Instrumentation or related engineering programat an accredited school and have completed 30 semester hours of undergraduate studies. 
  • Applicants must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.75. 
  • Interns may work up to 30 hours per week during the fall semester.
