How much do volunteer jobs pay per hour?
What is a volunteer?
A volunteer job is a non-paid position where you assist an organization by providing volunteer labor for a variety of tasks. Your responsibilities depend entirely on the type of organization for which you volunteer. There are many different types of volunteer positions. You can be a volunteer firefighter, a volunteer for a school or community event, a volunteer at a museum or for an architectural conservancy. You can volunteer to help with charity events or work at a soup kitchen, mission, or another type of non-profit. Typically, you report to volunteer coordinators who manage all volunteer services, such as connecting you with the right department or event, or providing you with materials or information useful for performing your services.

How do volunteers typically integrate with paid staff and other team members within an organization?
What is the difference between Volunteer vs Intern?
| Aspect | Volunteer | Intern |
|---|---|---|
| Credentials | No formal credentials required | Often requires enrollment in a program or related coursework |
| Work Environment | Non-paid, flexible, community or nonprofit settings | Typically structured, may be in offices, labs, or organizations |
| Employer & Industry Usage | Nonprofits, charities, community organizations | Businesses, nonprofits, government agencies |
| Search & Comparison Intent | Looking to give back or gain experience without pay | Seeking practical experience, networking, or career exploration |
Volunteers and interns both contribute to organizations but differ mainly in their commitments and goals. Volunteers offer their time without pay, often in community-focused roles, while interns typically participate in structured programs to gain industry experience, sometimes for academic credit. Understanding these differences helps individuals choose the right opportunity based on their needs and career goals.

Why Join Team SB
Make a Direct Impact in Your Community - Volunteer with Us!
Are you passionate about helping others learn and grow? The City is looking for dedicated volunteers to support library programs like adult literacy tutoring and homework help. Whether you're guiding a child through homework or helping an adult improve reading skills, your time can make a lasting impact - one learner at a time.
About the City: As a future member of our team, you'll be joining a city with deep roots, cultural diversity, and exciting momentum. Located in the heart of Southern California's Inland Empire, San Bernardino is the county seat and largest city in San Bernardino County, home to more than 222,000 residents. Its rich history - shaped by Native American, Mexican, and Spanish influences - continues to inspire the city's evolving identity.
San Bernardino offers access to major transit corridors, natural beauty, and a wide range of housing and lifestyle options. It's a place where public service careers are supported by a strong sense of community and purpose - and where motivated professionals can grow, contribute, and be part of something meaningful.
About the Position:
Library volunteers play a vital role in supporting lifelong learning, literacy, and student success in the San Bernardino community. Under the guidance of Library staff, volunteers assist with Adult Literacy Tutoring directly engaging with learners to build skills and confidence.
These roles are ideal for individuals who enjoy working with the public, believe in the power of education, and want to give back through consistent, hands-on service. Library staff provide all training and materials, making this a great opportunity for both first-time and experienced volunteers.
This is a rewarding way to make a lasting difference in the lives of others, one book, one question, and one connection at a time.
What You'll Be Doing Here
Adult Literacy Tutor
The Norman F. Feldheym Central Library is looking for dedicated adult volunteers to support learners in improving their reading, writing, speaking, and digital literacy skills.
As an Adult Literacy Tutor, you'll work one-on-one or in small groups with adults from diverse backgrounds - some learning English as a second language, others looking to boost their confidence with everyday literacy. You'll help them read more fluently, practice writing skills, or navigate basic computer tasks.
No prior experience is needed - just patience, empathy, and a commitment to helping others grow. Library staff will provide all training and materials.
Volunteer Hours:
- Mondays & Tuesdays: 12:00 PM - 5:30 PM
- Wednesdays & Thursdays: 10:00 AM - 5:30 PM
Minimum commitment: 5-10 hours/month for 6 months
What You Need to Qualify
Minimum qualifications may vary by department. Candidates who meet the specified criteria will be referred to the appropriate department(s) seeking volunteers.
Certain departments may require candidates to hold a valid California Motor Vehicle Operator's license.
As a condition of your volunteer assignment, you will be required to successfully complete a criminal background check before your start date.
Desirable Qualifications:
- Experience supporting adult learners and prior volunteer or community-based service
- Background in education, tutoring, ESL, or adult-education environments
- Coursework in English, literacy, communication, or related fields from an accredited college or university
