Job description

Clinical Instructor

The clinical instructor is a surgical on-site resource for Southeast Technical College (STC) Surgical Technology students. Responsible for student assignments, clinical evaluations, and course assessment data to meet STCs educational requirements, the rules and regulations of its accrediting bodies, and the most current industry standards.

Essential Functions
  • Orients new students to the surgery department, including the hospital's job description for Surgical Technologists, the Policy and Procedure Manual, location of educational resources, safety precautions and emergency protocols and blood-borne pathogens protection.
  • Assign students to a variety of surgical rooms and procedures to gain experience in the role of the Surgical Technologist.
  • Promotes a positive learning environment with emphasis on patient and student safety and compliance that meets national accrediting agency standards.
  • Exhibit professional behavior and communication that serves as a positive role model for students.
  • Complete weekly clinical evaluations with systematic observations, and timely feedback to the student according to STC program and hospital standards.
  • Meet regularly with STCs Surgical Technology Program Director to maintain productive two-way communication between the program and the hospital.
  • Provide feedback to the Program Director about current department and hospital policies or changes in practice in the Surgical Technology Field and recommend appropriate program changes.
  • Maintain current knowledge and skills through continuing education and professional development opportunities.
  • Perform other duties as assigned
Position Qualifications
  • Education: Associate's degree in Surgical Technology or related field required
  • Experience: One year full-time (at least 35 hours per week) work experience as a Surgical Technologist in an operating room environment required. Prior experience and best practice knowledge utilizing the sterile techniques and procedures for operating room protocol.
Physical Demands and Work Environment

Operating room standard of hospital environment and contains surgical instruments and equipment. Moderate to high noise levels typical of operating room environment. Lighting and temperature are adequate. Job requires moderate to long periods of standing. Possible exposure to surgical equipment injuries, human tissue, and body fluids.
